It’s A Small World After All

Wanna know why I am an international woman? Read on…. I was going to write about our inter-connected international world today. Then I discovered it’s International Women’s Day.  How perfect!

The story begins at the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Queens, New York. At the time we lived in Flushing so it was a no brainer to visit the fair. I was quite young, (pre-school age), but I have vivid memories of the fair.

I loved the globe outside Shea Stadium. Always adored images of globes, planets, stars. Planetariums were sacred. This fascination with the universe helped shape my passion for astrology. I remember asking my parents to buy me some coconut milk. I tried some for the first time and it was wonderful. Exotic yet comforting and delicious. As I look back I am so surprised that this young child with no Caribbean or Asian heritage was asking for coconut milk. It seems I was destined to be a citizen of the world before I ever left the continent.

Then we were off to the futuristic exhibits. I was very intrigued with the telephone and other electronic gadgets – moon in Gemini personified. I clearly remember watching the demonstration of the picture phone. I was so excited! I wondered when will we have this in my home? Apparently the answer is “ Skype killed any chances of that happening!”

The fair was magical and  I am so grateful that the original iconic globe remains. But I haven’t told you the best part of my trip. It was a ride called “ It’s a Small World ”.  Many people know of it from Disneyland or Disney World. But I believe it all started in Flushing.  Apparently Disney tested this attraction for possible inclusion in Disneyland. You got into a boat and it was dimly lit. Then you sailed into another room and the music began……

Next comes the glowing lights all around you and the most enchanting voices in every language imaginable. I was immersed in a sea of captivating visual displays featuring gorgeous costumes and bold colors.

I wanted to be part of this world so badly. I sang the song over and over again and begged my parents to take me on the ride another time. When I was much older I got to recreate my preschool memory by visiting Disney World. At that point I had been to a few foreign places and hungered for more. The astrologer in me knows that with my sun in a stellium in the 9th house and my venus and MH in Sagittarius,  I am going to have a love affair with the planet. Yet this connection seems much more soulful to me. I think it’s just that my entry into global consciousness is a little easier with my particular birth chart. I know we are approaching the new paradigm of what A Course in Miracles calls atonement.   At-one -ment

Let’s fast forward to 2013 when I start this blog adventure. I had no idea what would be in store. I have met glorious people from so many more places than I have yet to travel like Indonesia, India and New Zealand.  I have also met some closer to home that I wouldn’t have known existed without the beauty of WordPress. It is so incredibly liberating to communicate with amazing spirits who enjoy what I do and express their gifts of writing, photography, etc in their blogs. Perhaps WordPress should consider renaming itself WorldPress . What happens here would boggle the mind of that young girl gazing with wonderment at the picture phone all those years ago. Even with a planet of 7 billion and growing, it truly is a small world……

Seeking magic and awe in ordinary moments

  1. Wonderful! I consider myself a “global” citizen and my family is multi-cultural. With the explosion of technology I let my children have access to it, but if they wanted to “own” it, they had to purchase it. My son never would part with the money he saved and my daughter has always managed to find a way to access what she wanted – even if it meant going to the library for uninterrupted internet access “to study.” (Bill Gates needs to hire her…)
    Both of the kids have been involved with “pro bono” activities – a way of life – since I have been dragging them along with me on projects varying from raising guide dogs to sponsoring refugee families to epidemiological studies. My daughter volunteers every Sunday morning at a non-profit, working with kids. I’m proud of her for making it more than 90% of the time – I don’t think many teens would be able to do that, or willing to do that. (I don’t remind or drive her – this is her gig. She told me that several times when I offered to set the alarm clock or arrange for transportation.)
    Not that things are always rosy – but I did want to acknowledge that there has been an impact with the technology. I kept it out of the house when they were small and still keep it minimized. I was fortunate to have a like-minded neighbor – the kids were outside playing. Imaginations were encouraged. 🙂
    I get very discouraged, however, at the lack of consciousness for our global community. I won’t take the space here to get into it…. I am probably hyper-aware because of living in and adopting a child from a 3rd world country.

    1. You clearly are a global family and I am so impressed with how you have been able to help instill such important values in your children. Few teens would show such commitment and altruism. Bravo!

        Does it undo that I started taking them into nice restaurants when they were babies so they would know what was expected of them, even as a toddler?
        How about if I balance it out with they don’t like fast food – it’s a 1-2 time a year thing…

      2. Whoever said parenting is the hardest job in the world is right, so many choices and possible consequences. It sounds like many of your choices were intentional and not haphazard, so pat yourself on the back 🙂
        My sister and I were introduced very early on to long distance travel, lots of culture, books, etc and I know it impacted me greatly. They also kept us in front of the tv and took us to many fast food places. That also impacted me strongly. I love KFC and lobster, Arby’s and doro wat, my soap opera and indie films, hour of mindless TV and 2 graduate degrees, so there you go 🙂

  3. Wow, really you just started your blog in January? It has a developed blog feel, so good job. I mistakenly called in World Press and thought that is what it was until I noticed otherwise.

    The Word Press community is truly an international group of AWESOME people! I have been so richly rewarded in friendships and emotional support. When I was one my journey I knew that I was being held in love by so many friends here and elsewhere that it was comforting.

  4. I have been dreaming about travelling ever since I was small, always read travel books (especially Jules Verne and Jack London) and hated playing house. I wanted to be an explorer. I knew I did not want to stay in my home country (Poland). I live abroad (Switzerland) and intend to stay here.
    I think astrologically it has to do with my super strong Jupiter in the ninth house in conjunction with Mars, which also forms a trine to my Neptune in Sagittarius.
    I love diversity and richness of cultures. Homogeneity is boring (said my Gemini Sun).
    About technology… Bring it on! I think it has enhanced my life no end.

    1. Jupiter Mars in 9th trine Neptune in Sag is a great signature for loving and acting on love of foreign culture and diverse forms of higher consciousness, Symbol Reader. Have your read Sacred Contracts by Caroline Myss? She delineates the archetypes and creates her own system of astrology and divinity. One archetype that speaks to me ( and perhaps you as well) is the pioneer. she groups pioneer with explorer, settler, pilgrim, innovator, and entrepreneur. I resonate with the adventurer/explorer energy. Lately my exploration has been more internal than external , but my desire to travel has not waned. I visited Switzerland once and visited Lugano. Today when my paper came, Lugano was featured in the travel section. I loved what I saw, particularly the Alps, architecture and the civility of the society. And today I received a card from my mom with Paris on the cover. Little synchronicities everywhere! I am part Polish on both sides of my family but have not been to Eastern Europe. Have you been to the States? would love your impressions.

        No, I have never been to the States, unfortunately. But I feel drawn to this country and I know I will go there eventually.
