Lately I have been thinking about the origins of thoughts and ideas. Does the brain recognize and record impulses from collective consciousness or the Divine Mind? Is there really a difference between human/ego thoughts and spiritual knowing? When I say this idea came from me, what does that really mean?
I do not plan to solve this conundrum now. It is merely a prelude to today’s post about two subjects perfect for Mercury retrograde in Aquarius: society and memories.
It continually amazes me how certain childhood memories have such strong significance decades later in life. Here is one that is ready to leave the draft folder and make its debut.
When I was 10 years old we moved to New Britain, Connecticut. It was one of the most beautiful places I had ever been to in the United States, at that point in my life. Our apartment was an end unit and had three levels so it was closer to an actual house. This was a first for me, having lived only in apartments. The buildings were indicative of Shingle style architecture and were quite lovely. We lived in a rather undeveloped, highly wooded area and there was a brook in the backyard. Most of the complex was still under construction. I could not find an acceptable image of the area but the painting above provides a similar flavor.
I met a neighbor boy from my apartment complex and we took a long walk on the property. He was older and had dark hair. He was not a classmate and frankly I have no clue how we met or why were together. All I know is that this memory has remained ” on the front burner” throughout my life. We talked about subjects that were foreign but fascinating. The most intriguing idea he discussed was bartering. He told me there was a time when we did not have actual money and a totally different system of exchange was in place. As we moved through the woods immersed in nature, I tried to visualize this novel way of living. My mind was flooded with such exciting information. It was so exotic and sophisticated. To me the notion seemed futuristic.
As I reflect on the 21st century society I find myself in, I keep asking myself if the past was in many ways so much more progressive than the present? I also wonder if my love for my Connecticut home led me to live near the edge of the woods as an adult? Such magical notions arise in me when in nature. Some of my best conversations happen in the natural world. Who was this boy and why was he interested in talking to this young girl? I will probably never know, but I believe the barter system is making a comeback and will eventually replace our current system.
My mother repeatedly told me I was born too late. She meant I should have been born early enough to have been a hippie. Sometimes I think I would have preferred to have been part of a self-contained society where life was simple, natural, and rich with authenticity and meaning.
Are we heading in that direction?

This post is great, as well as all the comments. I too love the idea of bartering, and have tried it a couple of times. In one group, we actually had an exchange “certificate” which was kind of like money anyway, without the greed attached. I love the idea of everyone helping each other out. In this life, right now, money is how we exchange energy. It is how we use it that is what is so out of balance. There is so much greed tied to it right now. It is sort of terrifying right now, and good to “minimize our exposure.” It is a difficult line to walk. II agree that Michael could blog his comment. Thanks everyone!

Perhaps you are “an old soul” as the saying goes… If the barter system comes back it certainly could help out some countries that have sagging economies right now!

I am indeed an old soul. In my bones I feel that the current economics system is off course. I guess this has been a problem for centuries or longer. One could call it karma where some have excess and many have little. I do not know..

Linda…I too like the barter system which is still around but has sort of gone underground. I used to belong to a barter club where we exchanged free services; for example haircuts, house cleaning, babysitting, grass cutting, wood, eggs, chickens, etc, etc. In the country, neighbors don’t call it ‘bartering’, they call it ‘being neighborly’. Having lived through the hippy era, I still abide by the philosophy of that generation and so the kind of greed and corruption that is prevalent in our current day financial circles is extremely distasteful. The only way I can object to that lifestyle is by shunning consumerism and all the gadgets that go along with it…I only buy what is necessary. My computer is my luxury item! Still, in comparison to third world countries, I live a luxurious lifestyle! And I am most grateful for what I have. Great post – thanks!

I have used bartering a few times in terms of trading services like readings, healing, etc and have noticed these “trades” are popular among lightworkers. What I have not seen is exchanges of goods for goods, or goods for services, etc. I do not think wealth is a “bad: quality, it is what you do with it. I prefer a society that helps everyone rise up, which is more prevalent in Western Europe today. Greed is tricky, just like any urge that is out of control. So glad you enjoyed my post. Perhaps I had that conversation back in my childhood so I could bring it forth now 🙂

It strikes me that it is the essence of your experience of that word bartering that, in that moment, was so captivating. Sometimes I find a new concept opens up the possibility of “new” in general. It invokes the realization that things don’t have to be what they seem to be. And into that space slips a thought we didn’t think… a divine and given thought, rather than an intellectually efforted contusion. 🙂 Maybe a divine thought like people being taken care of and taking care of others through relationship, and it all working out flawlessly…
I think money probably began because it actually, as a system, enhanced bartering… Just imagine it. You want a belt, but the leather worker wants chickens, and all you have are baked goods. So you have to figure out how to trade baked goods for penny nails, penny nails for oysters, oysters for chickens, and chickens for your belt. But what if there were a universal “material” we could all trade each to each, like a universal value, a pure possibility… That would be awesome! That would simplify our lives tremendously…
That innocent side of money has been corrupted by our shared thought that money is itself valuable, no? It became a system that could be rigged, a leverage that could be applied, another way to experience strife and conflict…. But, the idea of a universal trading medium seems a good one… I could be way off… I wonder if your experience of bartering in that moment wasn’t a beautiful flash of an experience of the essence of being in true relationship with abundance… a deep insight…

I know on some level that time period is irrelevant but the 3rd dimension operates mostly on linear time. In 2015, we seem to be heading closer to feudalism and the aristocracy. The details terrify me so I try to minimize my exposure. However, I think this was the correct time to publish this tale and I also think that Divine timing wa at play back i Connecticut on that cosmic stroll..

We are definitely undergoing some form of economic reform as a planet. I think oligarchy may be the term for describing the power of the few governing the many. I can appreciate that you choose to minimize your exposure to a system that wasn’t made by nor for you (and the many), as you have written that you minimize your exposure.
I’ve been to New Britain, CT to visit a friend. I wasn’t very observant while driving through, I was eager and excited to visit with my friend. There was a warm memorable quality to the atmosphere that I am able to recall, a warm yellow color (must have been autumn). There were wet leaves on the ground…
