It’s All About the Yummy

There are many instances in my life where I doubted the point of being here, chained to a body and being at the mercy of unexpected events that challenge its survival. Many thought leaders are now touting the benefits of waking up and staying in human form. So I started to consider some of the perks of 3D material existence. Many metaphysical teachers claim that sensory experiences are unnecessary on the higher planes. Immediately I thought, no need for clothes, jewelry, shoes, food, etc.

So I created a blogging challenge ( a Sense-sational one, you might say), to invite people to really ponder the gifts of living in form. After all, we all know the limitations. Which of the 5 bodily senses are preferred and how do they enhance your life?  This is what I was looking to uncover, in order to create a conversation about incarnation with a certain perspective.

 Here is what I discovered about my preferences and delights:

If I was asked as a child to name my favorite sense, it would have been my sight. I have always been so fond of colors, patterns, and images and could not image functioning without use of my outer  eyes or third eye. I am definitely a visual learner and will forget names, but never a face! As my readers know, art is therapy for me and it never lets me down. Like C said in her post, the thought of becoming blind is simply unthinkable. My eyesight has certainly declined with time, but glasses fill the gap most of the time. I went from having superior vision ( 20/10) to requiring progressive lenses for myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Yet I am grateful that these are usually a  minor inconvenience. I am quite fortunate that I do not need to wear glasses all day, but mostly for reading or walking outside where distances are out of focus.

I have experienced many shifts in sensory acuity over the years. As a child and young adult, my sense of smell was impaired. I could not smell odors and fragrances that others took for granted. When someone suggested I smell a  delicious flower, it was both disappointing and frustrating to notice nothing.  Then one day my sense of smell improved dramatically. Not only can I smell a variety of wonderful fragrances, I am very sensitive to strong and unpleasant ones. It is a mixed blessing, as many seem to be.

My ability to hear has always been sub par, but it never prevented me from enjoying music. Music has always been my companion, especially during the darkest times. It is remarkable how the vibrations offer unlimited healing of body and spirit.  But my left ear was always trouble and a few years ago I developed tinnitus. I was tested and have some hearing loss in the right ear. So sometimes I  struggle to understand when  someone is muttering or has a strong accent. But I have adjusted the best I can.

While it is important to have a sense of touch/sensation , it is not my favorite; particularly when confronted with chronic painful health conditions.  However, I do not take anything for granted and value the pleasure that often accompanies the ability to feel bodily sensations. I would give anything to re-live the tactile sensation of a head bump from Dexter, or the calming warmth of Jasmine sleeping on the back of my legs. Hugging my nieces or petting my cat “babies” are treasured moments that make life rich with meaning.

Like the majority of the challenge writers, I enjoy having access to all of my senses. In fact, I am pleased that I often have access to intuition, clairvoyance, clairsentience, and a few others. But the sense that provides me the most joy is the sense of taste, in the form of food. Interestingly enough, my sense of taste was not important as a young child. I was a very picky eater with not much of an appetite. Breakfast before school each day was half a slice of toast. Exciting, right? But as I matured, I began to develop a sophisticated palate and became a foodie in training.

Enjoying food is more than taking pleasure in consumption of fuel for the body; it is a process that integrates all five senses. Sight, sound, smell, touch, along with taste, can play a role in the gustatory experience.

Here are a few examples:

The sizzle of meat and veggies cooking on the grill.

The crunch of popcorn coinciding with the sharpness of salt and the luxurious feel of creamy butter.

The intoxicating smell of freshly brewed coffee.

The deep burgundy hue of a glass of Merlot.

The neon pink cloud of cotton candy.

The brittle caramelized sugar layer on top of creme brulee.

The silky texture of frozen vanilla custard meeting the decisive crunch of the sugar cone.

The bittersweet taste and unctuous smoothness of dark chocolate mousse.

The comforting aroma of mom’s chicken soup simmering on the stove.

The complex, thick, savory – sweetness of chicken mole.

The vivid, maroon goodness of red velvet cake, complemented by sweet, velvety cream cheese icing.

The crackle of peking duck skin marrying the succulent meat and unami hoisin sauce with the crisp bite of scallions and soft mandarin pancakes. Peking duck is a dish that exemplifies holy matrimony of the delicious kind!

One of my dreams is to be the next Anthony Bourdain so I can incorporate my passion for food, travel, and writing together as a food/travel critic. In the meantime, though, I am happy to share with you my thoughts and feelings on all things yummy here at litebeing chronicles. Thank to all who participated in this challenge either directly or vicariously. I appreciate your patience with me in finishing my own offering. Time kinda got away from me.

Speaking of time, let me wish all of my readers the very best of 2018. Please love your Selves first so that more energy is available to you for all you wish to manifest.  The journey really is within, after all.

Venus Stationing in Capricorn Conjunct Pluto – You and I

Here’s a Christmas treat from litebeing chronicles for you all to savor with some eggnog, hot cocoa, or whatever your heart desires. It is a “classic” post from 2014 about Venus, Saturn/ Cap and Pluto ( among other things). It seems to be quite fitting as Venus conjoins Saturn in Capricorn today. Venus will be catching up again with Pluto on 1/9/18.

While the events of 2014 don’t exactly mirror the present moment, there are a few themes that do ring true. As I contemplate the nature of love and being loved on this day of endless, eternal love, allow me to wish you more light and joy than ever before. <3<3<3

Thank you for the overwhelmingly positive response to my Awakening post. Reading and responding to your comments was very emotionally moving for me. I was going to blog about Venus Retrograde much sooner, but thinking about and finally writing about my spiritual opening consumed all of my psychic energy. So I decided to post now in the wake of the Venus station , which is extremely close to Pluto. A Dream Sampler ~ My Winter Solstice Tribute

As a psychotherapist, I am sensitive to those who tend to pathologize or judge the inner experiences of others. INFJ at the Holidays?

Happy Mars in Scorpio everyone! I know that having Mars leave my solar 12th house is a big relief. Hard to believe 2017 is coming to an end, when I can hardly catch my breath. I have re-posted this “Holiday Classic” from the archives, hoping it will be useful to those who are in need of self-care at this time. Will be back soon with my Sense-Sational Challenge post. I was ready to dive into an astrology article including Taylor Swift, but she will have to shake it off just a little bit longer. I am sensing a need to write about how to navigate the holiday season with fun and a lot less drama. I have wanted to write about INFJs and HSPs ( Highly Sensitive People) for a while, and this seems to be the perfect time.

 Where is the INFJ in this picture?

He or she is probably in the basement or store bathroom with their hands over their ears! The INFJ personality is very sensitive, intuitive, headstrong, and idealistic. This  archetype is also generally quite introverted, perfectionistic, and value-driven. I think the HSP personality is a derivative of the INF ( Introvert Intuitive Feeling) categories in the Myers Briggs system.

As a card-carrying member of both clubs, I can unequivocally say that this time of year can be difficult. While I am still carrying out my radical gratitude practice, I am also aware that taking practical steps towards improved self-care should not be brushed aside. Be grateful that you are swamped with party invitations, but don’t feel obligated to attend all of them.

Here are some helpful tips for INFJs and HSPs and the people who love them. Take them with copious grains of salt and discernment. You will know what works best for you.

1 – Goody – goody, my inner self replies. INFJs love lists, plans and calendars! We are not the most flexible people on the planet and can get stressed out with spontaneous or last-minute changes in plans. It is OK to decline an invitation or suggest a quiet get together after the holidays. Know your limits and respect them.

2 – If you are at a dinner or party with an INFJ or HSP and engage them in small talk or gossip, don’t be surprised if they tune you out or head for the nearest exit. We like to communicate, but we don’t do meaningless chat. Ask us about what we are reading or our favorite causes. Tell us about your hopes and dreams or your ideal travel destination. Don’t bore us with tales about The Housewives of Las Vegas or details on your brother’s latest get rich scheme.

3 – We get overstimulated quickly and crowds make us uneasy. I have learned to pick and choose my social activities wisely. If I find myself in a setting that is too loud or negative or just plain chaotic, I will seek out someone whose company I enjoy and strike up a conversation. If that isn’t possible, I will excuse myself and leave. I am not shy and can easily initiate conversations. INFJs and HSPs are not necessarily shy wallflowers. Where you fit on the continuum will determine how introverted and sensitive you are, and that is often subject to change. Introversion does not imply shyness anyway. It means that we are drained by people. We are energized by going within.  I love interacting with people in real-time, but I need to have some control over my environment and know my limitations.

4 – If you notice you are overindulging in food or alcohol, it may be a sign that you are stuffing your emotions. I have coped with over-stimulation in the past by drinking way too much and I don’t really like to drink! Listen to the messages that your feelings deliver to you instead, and don’t behave in ways that don’t serve you. There is a difference between enjoying holiday treats and self-medicating. If you do not know the difference, get some support so that you can learn what works for you. Ask yourself if it is really worth it to alter your brain chemistry just to be in a room with people.

5 – Sensitive types often react to stress in a variety of ways. We are prone to migraines, digestive issues, and allergies. Some fragrances and noises trigger these reactions. Do not take it personally if we cannot be around your perfume or cigarette smoke or accompany you to a rave at the local warehouse. It isn’t you , it is us. Sensitivity is such a tremendous gift, but it comes with a price.

6 – In this hyper-consumerism culture, the pressure is high to buy, buy, buy. INFJs love to please our loved ones with unique, person-specific gifts. We delight in these details and remember that you adored that one-of- a- kind brooch while window shopping last July. Again, it is important to be kind to yourself. It really is okay if you cannot afford to buy everything for everyone all of the time. We can be so hard on ourselves and that self-criticism can be projected onto others when it gets out of hand. Let yourself off your self-imposed hook. If money is tight or time is limited, use your creativity instead. Bake, sew, knit, draw, or  photograph personal tokens of holiday cheer. It really is the thought that counts at the end of the day. This is why I really prefer Thanksgiving!

7 – Last but not least, feed your soul. HSPs and INFJs really benefit from the following activities: walk in nature, meditate, pray, create art, visit places of beauty, do yoga, take frequent breaks from your routine to just BE, write, play an instrument, read…  The more you love yourself, the better prepared you are to be in the world, but not of the world.

Sense-sational Blogging Challenge

Thanks to all for making this marvelous Blogging Challenge such a success. I always enjoy meeting new folks and cementing bonds with “old-timers” through this endeavor.
