Alleluia, and Good Morning

This blog says so eloquently what I have felt for many years. Blessings on this weekend that celebrates the portal to rebirth and re-newal.

Resurrection.jpgToday is, for many, a day without irony. It is a day one can see not just daylight through cracks in tomb doors, but can look back into what was their tomb from the satisfying light of a new dawn.

These patterns of light and dark, day and night, life and death happen so regularly that they’re almost not worth mentioning. Except, they are.

The ancients call it Paschal Mystery. A repeating pattern of living and dying and renewing that, through the eternal Christ, is everywhere present, everywhere accessible.

Faith is merely the God-given sight necessary to awaken to it. And Easter is the primal, archetypal key that opens that door.

Today is Easter. Resurrection. All that was dark, dead, hopeless, and not, is brought back into glorious harmony with God and the cosmos. Through Christ, today, we feel its warmth. Today, we know its hope.

Today is for all…

Ode to Donna

Let’s drink a toast to Donna

who relished quality wine

she lived her life with gusto

and ended it by design

Chocolate, fine food, and cigarettes were among her vices

lung cancer is tough going even for the strong

smoking led to her untimely demise

after diagnosis , her time on Earth was not long

public domain image

A Pisces at heart, she enjoyed a relaxing bath

filled to the brim with bubbles

apparently the bubbly immersion

melted away her troubles

She was my online friend

an astrologer like no other

we both had colon issues

she doted on me like a mother

Feisty, generous, stubborn, and direct

we could have similar genes

how do you miss someone you never met

except within a dream?

This quickly put together scrappy poem is my salute to Donna, who passed away on December 8th. I knew of her years before I “met her” on Facebook as I had  bought one of her books on lunar nodes. She was a teacher, healer, astrologer, mother, friend, and organizer of a very special annual astrology conference. She was a very knowledgeable person and lectured on many topics including gemstones and astrology. Donna was also a regular speaker at the magickal Lilydale.

Donna was not always the easiest person to get along with.  The song My Way by Frank Sinatra comes to mind when I think about how she led her life. I regret that I did not have the resources to travel to meet her at a conference. I did see her in a dream and told her about it. I surmised it was a sign we would meet on this plane. She refused any treatment for the cancer and it quickly took her life. It continually amazes me how quickly beings enter and exit our sphere of existence, although I have witnessed this pattern over and over again.

We conversed often on Facebook and in private messages. We exhanged info on astrology, food, and diverticulitis. I  took an online class with her on stress and the horoscope, which was great. She was so wise about so many subjects and had traveled the globe, taking in so much of what life had to offer her. Donna was an icon, yet conducted herself as down to earth as anyone. I think the smoking did her in, when all is said and done.  She was uncompromising about living on her terms. I admire her for it, yet wish she could have stuck around longer.

How do you miss someone you never met , except within a dream?

Rest in peace Donna, knowing so many people loved you and that your legacy is rich and strong.

At this time of Solstice across the planet, let’s take time to appreciate the dance between dark and light, love and fear, endings and beginnings. One does not penetrate consciousness in the absence of the other in this current dimension in which we have chosen to incarnate.

Life is always in flux. While some forms are fading, others are blooming. The trick is to recognize which direction you are moving in and when to let go.

It is humbling to be nearing my fourth year of blogging and to be able to compose some thoughts about the year ahead and the year I lived through. The more I slow down, the easier it is for me to notice that existence has no clear demarcations. Astrologers love cycles and make mention of the significant planetary movements via stations, transits, and progressions. And yet, because of our cosmic fluency, we are perhaps more likely than most to acknowledge the fragility and malleability of time. Time and music marry well together and led me to use Closing Time in this post title.

To understand where I am today, it is necessary to return to April 2016. At the New…

Dust to Dust ~ A Mandala Tale

https://www.facebook.com/drepunggomang/

Today was about doing something new in a place filled with ghosts. I like most things circular, you know this. Kaleidoscopes, astrological wheels, globes, mandalas, hex signs, planets, bangles, hoops, etc. So when one of my coworkers took a group to see a sand mandala demonstration, I was intrigued. It sounded fascinating. I really wanted to join them, but it was not possible. When I learned that the monks destroyed the entire project at the end, my curiosity peaked. What is the purpose? How can you obliterate something you meticulously built with such care?

When I heard that a sand mandala was being created this week at Material Culture, I made a mental note to find some time. Material Culture is a wonderful space filled with exotic treasures from around the world. I used to work at the same complex where it is situated. Interestingly enough,  both a satellite office and the corporate office of two former employers are located rather close together. They share the same side of the parking lot. I moved from one agency to the other and spent some time in both offices. I had wanted to explore Material Culture, but never found the opportunity. My new position kept me quite busy. I promised myself I would go back there some day.

Well that was today.

It was strange retracing my steps as I navigated the parking lot. I have mixed emotions about both of these former employers. There are  some other businesses that occupy this unusual warehouse complex, which is certainly off the beaten track. But the striking view of Center City Philadelphia in the distance never disappoints.  As soon as I entered Material Culture and got a whiff of the incense, my energy shifted. I felt so grounded and relaxed. It was as if I had entered a different dimension. The space is vast and museum-like. There was no signage, but eventually I found the section where the monks were selling wares and working on the sand mandala. It was such a sensual feast ~ a mix of vibrant colors, rich deep scents, and striking sounds that sounded almost musical in nature. I took off my clogs, found a cushion, and drank it all in.

Tomorrow is when they deconstruct the mandala. I could not bear to see that happen. But I was able to contemplate the principle at play. No-thing in form is permanent and all consciousness is in a state of flux. Stay in the moment and be the change.

The header image was taken by me, via my cellphone. Notice that it has more detail than the other image, shot earlier in the day by the Drepung Gomang Buddhist Center. We are forever being recycled, birthed and extinguished, dust to dust.

I highly recommend you attend such a ceremony if you can find one in your area. The skillful intensity of the Tibetan monks is breathtaking and the mandala art, exquisite. I would have stayed longer had I felt more energized. I do feel somewhat better health-wise, but still a bit weak and fatigued. The energy from the physical space and the monks did fuel my spirit and enhance my mood. The charge was positive and the people I encountered seemed peaceful and upbeat.

I found this song after choosing the title for this blog. It is new for me, unlike the complex I visited today. And yet, the message haunts me. It seems to complement the theme of opening up the self to break through any isolation. This resonates for me strongly. I hope it also makes an impact on you.

Words and Pictures

the-little-falls-sketch-1918.jpg!Large

Words and Pictures is a film I have longed to see for a good while. The draw for me is my passion for both writing and the visual arts. It had alluded me at the theater and disappeared from cable and Netflix without warning. It reappeared this week on On Demand fortunately.

Mini-review: This film is about two lonely, wounded artists who find one another and challenge each other to become better versions of themselves. The acting is magnificent. Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen are beautifully matched here. I am a fan of both in such films as Chocolat, Bee Season, Croupier, and Closer. But I would be inclined to say they gave better performances in this piece. I appreciated mostly the nuances in what wasn’t said, the intricacies expressed by their facial expressions were on full display.

The main premise asks the question: Which medium is more moving , pictures or words? While the answer still remains a mystery, the film uses both words and visuals to provide drama, inspiration, and some comic relief. Both main characters struggle with loss, failure, and emotional vulnerability. It seems like they have become reduced to lifeless, half-dead, shells. But life has other plans….

The purpose of this post is to pair images with words and have you, the reader, decide your preference. I am pairing the paintings of J. E. H. MacDonald and the words of  poets from Love Poems from God and quotes by The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo for your enjoyment and comparison.

First pairing:

5.1.5

I WOULD CEASE TO BE by St. Teresa of Avila

God

dissolved

my mind – my separation.

I cannot describe now my intimacy with Him.

How dependent is your body’s life on water and food and air?

I said to God ” I will always be unless you cease to Be.”

And my Beloved replied, ” And I

would cease to Be

if you

died.”

Second pairing:

the-tangled-garden-1916

LIKE ROOTS by St. Thomas of Assisi

Our hands imbibe like roots

so I place them on what is beautiful in this world.

And I fold them in prayer, and they

draw from the heavens

light.

Third pairing:

The stream of life that runs through the world,

runs through my veins.  ~  Rabindranath Tagore

Fourth pairing:

And then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk to bloom.  ~ Anais Nin

Final reflections ~

This is not a contest, just merely an exercise to focus on the wonder of the written word and the dance of color and light. I will admit that blogging has afforded me the luxury of marrying my words with art, a luxury I am unlikely to relinquish without a fight.

The beauty of Words and Pictures is the restoration of the main characters. This is a partial restoration or reset point. While neither one goes back in time, before the damage and wounds set in, they emerge lively and prolific once more. Compromises were made and risks were taken. Through this process, rebirth prevailed.

Happy Spring from litebeing,

May you embrace your inner Easter.

Bouncing Back

Photo858

2015 has been a very intense year, full of surprises and obstacles. I came into the year full of excitement and hope. Saturn was leaving Scorpio and moving up towards my Midheaven. Time to manifest and rebuild.

Or so I thought. Taking my pension a bit early was much more of an adjustment than anticipated. I figured that having some monetary security would actually build my confidence once I resume my job search. I also thought that taking my time would allow for some truly necessary relaxation and self-care.

Apparently the Universe had other ideas. The acceptance of having nearly approached government-employee retirement age proved very difficult. Old stuff came to the surface in a variety of unusual ways. I experienced bodily sensations and dreams that put death and mortality on the front burner once more. Strong themes of mortality were rising to the surface and were beginning to become a preoccupation. Having a medical emergency and then needing to put Dexter down gave more power to old fears and worries about the unknown.

Due to all the obstacles of the past few months, I did not get back on the horse. I have not looked for work. Saturn fell short of hitting my Midheaven , but it will arrive there in a few short months. With mars in Leo and the transiting sun on my Descendant, I feel a bit more momentum, but there are still many loose ends that need to be addressed and losses to mourn.

Those who read here regularly know I am a dreamer and a dreamworker. My dreams are easily recalled and typically powerful. While I do not always attend to their symbology, I am fortunate that they are available to me.

Photo879

I had a powerful dream recently that is worth documenting here.

In my dream  I find myself behind the wheel sleepy and with poor vision. I do not have control of the car and I am damaging the side of one parked car. I am moving faster and faster and am about to drive smack into the middle of a house. I tell myself ok this is it and I am feeling relieved and ready. I am ready to leave this world. The car begins to make impact and crashes straight into the house, but then miraculously bounces back and richochets backwards! Both myself and the car are intact. It was as if the crash never happened. I am amazed and try to reach for the emergency brake. Then I wake up.

I have had many many dreams in the past where I was behind the wheel, out of control and mercy to whatever situation presents itself. This theme of powerlessness is not new to me and I understand its ramifications. I have also had dreams where I almost had an accident or that I survived unharmed.

This was not one of those times.

This was a new reality where actions were reversed and my welfare was fiercely protected. I have not given the dream a thorough analysis, but woke up the next morning with a sense of excitement and awe. Perhaps I can bounce back from all the hardship and pain. Perhaps I can survive the fear and lack of control over my destiny. There are so many miracles seen and unseen.

Happy Astrology Day : Here comes the sun!

Thank God for the twinkling and twirling of light.

Happy Spring Equinox and 0 Degree Aries. Also  a very happy Autumnal Equinox to those in the Southern Hemisphere. Either way, a change is a comin’ and I say woohoo!

To my fellow star lovers, I wish you a Joyous International Astrology Day! This is like our version of New Year’s Day, with Aries ushering in new beginnings. Remain patient while Mars and Saturn continue their retrograde status.

Pluto station – purge, clear, forgive, release

On September 20, 2013 at 11:29 AM EST, Pluto goes direct.

Here are keywords for Pluto – the masses, underworld, regeneration, crime, rebirth, obsession, slow growth, undoing, transformation, power, control, redemption.

Depending on where you live,  you still have at least a few more hours to work with the Pluto energies.  I checked first to make sure everyone has some time! With so many international friends now, I am more cognizant of the ” movement” of time….   see http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

I would not worry about where Pluto resides in your birth chart or where it is transiting currently. Pluto makes its presence known and for the purpose of this post, I want to accentuate tools over technicalities. What is crucial is to find the proper tools that suit you.  I like dreamwork, prayer, chanting, letter writing, meditation, rummaging through both literal and metaphorical closets and drawers, griefwork, exercise, journaling, drumming and (general use of percussion instruments), and releasing of  toxicity by allowing any residual emotions to come up and be expressed.

This is an incredibly powerful time so I hope others are seizing this opportunity to excavate and let go.

I have found this particular Mantra Mediation series by Deva Premal & Miten profoundly potent. I have not chanted in eons and now I feel like I want to chant non-stop! I have been discovering a new voice inside of me that actually takes over while chanting. It is such a natural high that is free and healthy for anyone!

I also want to recommend using the Ho’oponopono prayer. Some of my fellow bloggers have been posting it recently and I have been practicing with great results.

I AM SORRY

PLEASE FORGIVE ME

I LOVE YOU

THANK YOU

Once you have done some deep cleaning, you can continue to move forward with co-creating and manifestation. Here are the lyrics to SemiSonic’s Closing Time. Read the words first and digest them before listening to the music :

Closing time

Open all the doors and let you out into the world
Closing time
Turn all of the lights on over every boy and every girl
Closing time
One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer
Closing time
You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here

 [Chorus:]

I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

Closing time
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from
Closing time
This room won’t be open till your brothers or your sisters come
So gather up your jackets, move it to the exits
I hope you have found a friend
Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end

[Chorus:]
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

Closing time
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from

[Chorus:]
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
I know who I want to take me home
Take me home

Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end

NAMASTE

Calling All Angels

jowall_15_l

Now it’s time to get back to some storytelling. While my last few posts did not stray from my theme, this blog is primarily about sharing stories on how my everyday experiences contain some light. I am excited to share another true story with you. It’s about angels and me. So once upon a time……

But first,  here’s a little background –

Early Influences – My childhood was not filled with angels , except for the movies and one angel story. Glinda from The Wizard of Oz was an angelic archetype for me, as was The fairy godmother from Cinderella . I longed for both of them to enter my life. Perhaps those figures fueled my interest in shows like Touched By An Angel and films like City of Angels.  Once my father told me a story about Gabriel and how we come into this life.

This version was taken from http://sangabrielshorn.com/history.htmhttp://sangabrielshorn.com/history.htm

There is a tradition that Gabriel is the Angel of Birth. It is said that he carefully spends the nine months of the pregnancy watching over each unborn child and instructing that child on the necessary knowledge of Heaven that is an inherent part of all people. Just before birth, though, Gabriel touches each baby on the upper lip to make the child unable to remember all of the information about Heaven until the child returns to the spiritual state at death. The sign of Gabriel’s Touch is the cleft just below the nose.

I remember wondering how this process actually works and became very curious about life before and after we incarnate. It was a pleasant memory of religion for me amidst a typically fearful religious atmosphere laden with guilt, rigidity, obedience, and tradition for tradition’s sake. This particular  story contained mystery and magic, which is probably why it has stayed with me throughout the years.

Watch – A few years ago my watch stopped working and I was told that I could no longer replace the battery. So I looked for replacement right away.  I found an inexpensive but delightful bracelet watch which was part of a holiday collection. I liked the fact that it stretched to fit my small wrist and that it was mostly copper in color, making it neutral. It had the most lovely assortment of charms.

The bracelet had lovely angelic figures alongside stars and engraved sections displaying peace, hope, love, bliss, etc. What seemed to be unusual about this watch was the reaction I got wherever I wore it:  coworkers, neighbors, passengers on the train,  strangers in elevators , medical technicians: everyone would grab me and ask ” Where did you get this watch? ” I figured  it must be the angels. I will never forget the time I went to Pendle Hill for a Quaker gathering. One evening we stood in a circle holding hands. I heard a noise, looked down, and then noticed my watch had scattered into pieces all over the floor!  I felt the sadness of this loss and wanted to find a way to turn it around. Instead of getting it repaired  I decided to honor its unraveling by giving away some of the angels. I gave away some of the charms to special women while at Pendle Hill. Later I gave away a few more to other significant angels in my circle  This process was very powerful and transformative. It showed me that the energy associated with the watch can live on in a different form.  I still have a few pieces of the watch.

Automotive Angels –

About a month ago, I took my car in for an oil change. The car is reliable but old and well-lived. The shop mechanic said the car was excessively leaking oil and transmission fluid.  I did not have the money to pay for major repairs. The car had been making odd noises while in reverse, which I chose to overlook. I’m feeling pretty lousy and frustrated since I have put plenty of money into the car and recalled past experiences with failed engines and transmissions. As I am about to leave, a man calls over to me . I had not seen him  before, either in the waiting area or in the garage until this moment. He looks like someone straight out of Central casting: A balding hefty guy with big glasses smoking on a cigar. He looks over at me and says ” Sometimes an excessive oil leak is not what it sounds like. You can just check for oil.” Than the mechanic comes out and says ” We can tap off the oil for free anytime you come by.” Then the cigar dude says ” See what he said.” and he grinned at me. A few days later I go to a transmission center for a free transmission check. I  tell the manager what happened and I describe the odd noise the car makes in reverse. As I hand him the remote, I mention that the keys have begun to fall off the chain because the remote has broken. A few minutes later the manager calls me over to look over the vehicle. Apparently the brakes were making that noise signaling the need for repair. He also said that there are some leaks but that the transmission is not in need of any repair at this time. The noise was gone after he repaired the brakes and he also fixed my key remote!

I believe the broken remote is symbolic and the restoration  of the key remote represents a healing:

According to http://tylluanpenry.blog.co.uk/2010/01/19/the-symbolism-of-the-key-7787842/

Both physically and magically, a key can both unlock and lock things. This ability to be on both sides of the same argument is sometimes called ‘antagonistic’ and you come across it quite a bit in magic. You can see it in the saying ‘under lock and key’, which when you think about it is rather overstating things; why not just ‘under lock,’ or ‘under key’? But the presence of lock AND key shows the antagonistic side of keys… we turn the key in the lock one way, and deprive someone of their liberty. Turn it the other way and we set them free. The lock doesn’t work without its key, and vice versa.

The Roman god Janus (the month January is named after him) was, amongst other things, a god of doors and beginnings, and was often shown holding a staff and a key. In Christianity the iconography of the key is almost always associated with the Apostle Peter, since he was supposed to be the keeper of the gates of heaven. Sometimes the key is shown in double form.

If you hand over a key then you are granting someone power. Granting someone the freedom of a city is an example – giving them a key to the gates means they can come and go as they wish.

In the same way, when young people celebrate their 21st birthday they are often given a symbolic key ‘the key of the door’ although what door exactly is rarely ever specified. What I think it means is that when they reach 21 they used to be considered an adult – and the key symbolised their newfound power to access the world of adults and all that it entails. At least, that’s my theory!

This might also explain why keys can symbolise being initiated – the key gives you access to knowledge that was previously hidden. So when we say something like, ‘The key to inner happiness…’ (or winning the lottery, or the key to success) we’re unconsciously drawing on the key symbolising arcane knowledge. And knowledge is power.

In my case, the concept of initiation really resonates for me. As I reflected on the chain of events, getting the oil change alerted me to the need to get the transmission checked. Having the transmission checked resulted in fixing my brakes, which potentially saved my life and the lives of others. Meeting both the man with the cigar and the transmission shop manager helped restore hope in my heart, access knowledge, and reclaim my power.

I wondered if the man with the cigar was real. Could he have been an angel? He certainly showed me kindness during a challenging time and appeared virtually out of the ethers. His intervention helped me find the strength to get the transmission checked. What about the transmission manager who fixed the brakes , fixed the remote, and solved the mystery of the odd car noise? He fixed the remote without prompting and free of charge. He also gave me a discount on my bill, which was substantially smaller than major transmission work would cost.

josephine wall

There is no neat resolution to this story. The car will require frequent fluid checks to assess a need for major repairs. I am still unable to afford a new car. Yet I learned so much about my assumptions about cause and effect. I also was gifted with another round of synchronicity, which tells me I may hold the key to something larger than 3D reality.

Finally, this saga is in need of a soundtrack. I am providing the music for the closing credits. I am open to suggestions for more musical accompaniment as well as reactions to this tale.

Who are the angels? Glinda, Gabriel, The bracelet watch, The folks who received the charms,  Cigar dude?
