Alleluia, and Good Morning

This blog says so eloquently what I have felt for many years. Blessings on this weekend that celebrates the portal to rebirth and re-newal.

Resurrection.jpgToday is, for many, a day without irony. It is a day one can see not just daylight through cracks in tomb doors, but can look back into what was their tomb from the satisfying light of a new dawn.

These patterns of light and dark, day and night, life and death happen so regularly that they’re almost not worth mentioning. Except, they are.

The ancients call it Paschal Mystery. A repeating pattern of living and dying and renewing that, through the eternal Christ, is everywhere present, everywhere accessible.

Faith is merely the God-given sight necessary to awaken to it. And Easter is the primal, archetypal key that opens that door.

Today is Easter. Resurrection. All that was dark, dead, hopeless, and not, is brought back into glorious harmony with God and the cosmos. Through Christ, today, we feel its warmth. Today, we know its hope.

Today is for all…

Poetry – Grace Everpresent

photo_9285_20090125

Where is Grace?

Grace is realizing the car keys are in your other pocket

Grace is when the cop gives you a warning this time

Grace is when the red birds descend on your terrace ” just because”

Grace is when you discover your checkbook error

that you subtracted one hundred dollars by mistake

Grace is when the sky opens and the sun tells the clouds to get lost for a spell

Grace is the neighbor’s cat who snuggles with you after yours has passed away

Grace is the stranger who helps you pick up your groceries off the floor

Grace is the MRI that reveals you don’t have that illness after all

Grace is accepting what is and surviving with renewed hope

Grace is a whole heart after a lifetime of shatters and scars

Grace is a million new beginnings

Grace is finding love way past your prime

Grace is everpresent

update:

I wrote this poem , or rather this poem wrote me, from a place filled with a mixture of despair, emptiness, hope, and gratitude. Your response has been wonderful and I thank you.  My poetry has always been fueled by intense emotion and manifests only when it is good and ready. Stay tuned for new arrivals in future posts.

Peace Among the Ruins

I am at peace. I woke up this way after a long uneventful sleep. Many hours later, this feeling nurtures my soul. I could attribute it to the new moon conjoining my natal moon ( 1 degree away) and Jupiter retrograding tomorrow exactly conjunct my natal sun. But I do not think it has anything to do with it!

Every so often I enter this spaciousness and one of the gifts at my disposal is to carry over my dream life residue into my waking life. This is not easy to describe, but if you are a “dreamer”, you will understand.

I attribute this blessing as a grace that may have arrived because I allowed myself to feel my pain and grief. I have been pummeled by the sudden deaths of Anthony Bourdain and a former patient. I see these losses as unnecessary and tragic. But guess what, we do not get to judge.

I have found myself reciting the Serenity Prayer often these past few days:

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

I am also moved to include a quote that I find helpful in time of tragedy:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Leonard Cohen

Sometimes we become immersed in an experience the dwells outside of time, space, astrology and it is seemingly paradoxical. A few days before the pummeling began I saw a job advertisement to run programming for a Grief program. While it seemed in some ways like an unlikely fit, my guidance nudged me with a quiet whisper. Only a couple of days after I emailed the organization, I was contacted for a phone interview. I was quite surprised since I did not seem a logical choice. The interview took place less than a day after I learned of my former patient’s death. I carried on with the interview anyway and allowed myself to just go with the flow. I was given feedback that I would bring a lot to the position. While I do not know where this will take me, I follow my nudges more and more each day. I am living proof of someone who can hold sadness in one hand and hope in the other. I threw out my back on Monday, yet I feel less restriction today.

What I want to convey to you dear readers, is that paradox is not an anomaly and that we can all heal and recover. It does not mean that I have finished grieving. It does mean that if you can read my words, you are still most likely alive! I do not know about anyone else, but I plan to live my life with passion and exuberance. This is not about spiritual bypass, but about gratitude for having the gift of spiritual embodiment into form.  While chaos swirls around and life is anything but smooth or certain, peace does prevail and vulnerability is a strength.

Blessings to you on this New Gemini Moon!

What a long strange trip it’s been, indeed.

My inspiration for the Time Machine Challenge started on a crisp and brilliant afternoon in September. If you are new to my blog or would like to catch up on your reading, please visit here to find the entire roster of spectacular challenge blogs. Reminiscing about my first September in Philly and the man who represented that era took me back to a state of excitement and joy.  I was amazed how my instantaneous flash of insight was later validated when I visited a website where that former boyfriend currently works. According to Michael Lutin, this time period before the New Scorpio Moon accentuates preoccupation and/or random encounters with past lovers or folks who trigger memories of former flames.

A few connections from Leigh and Laura gently guided me on a path of forgiveness and acceptance of the past. Leigh’s post

Life is always in flux. While some forms are fading, others are blooming. The trick is to recognize which direction you are moving in and when to let go.

It is humbling to be nearing my fourth year of blogging and to be able to compose some thoughts about the year ahead and the year I lived through. The more I slow down, the easier it is for me to notice that existence has no clear demarcations. Astrologers love cycles and make mention of the significant planetary movements via stations, transits, and progressions. And yet, because of our cosmic fluency, we are perhaps more likely than most to acknowledge the fragility and malleability of time. Time and music marry well together and led me to use Closing Time in this post title.

To understand where I am today, it is necessary to return to April 2016. At the New…

Poetry – Grace Everpresent

I am having a shaky day, in the shadows of a brilliant Solstice Celebration last evening. I am in need of consolation, so I shall use my words to comfort myself. This poem was written during a very dark time and I remember it well.

As a bonus, I am linking to an article I found about Grace. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Here is a sample:

Grace is Courage – You are in a state of grace when, during those moments when you can see no way out of a predicament, you know that love will prevail. Even though you may feel afraid, there is so much love in your heart that you know you will not give up. Grace is the warmth in your heart that gives you courage.

Please hold me in your thoughts and prayers as I navigate another challenge that I cannot control or avoid. The only way is through.

A Lifetime of Miracles

I am not really a holiday person. I have written about this before. Yet at certain times in my life I have wished to embrace and experience firsthand the ” miracles of the season” that many have talked about. So far this season has been bleak for me. Yet this morning I looked out the window and noticed the birds are back. And I spotted a lone red bird ….

So I am reposting my poem Grace Everpresent as my Winter Solstice Message to you. There are many who are in need of love, abundance, comfort, etc at this time. I feel for you. I know you. I AM you.

WISHING YOU BLESSINGS AND A LIFETIME OF LIGHT

Guest Post

I have a guest post today over at the blog of Amber Skye Forbes. The title is: The Road to Resilience. I did something a bit different – I write about my views  on grief, loss and how to thrive through a psycho-spiritual lens.  I draw from both my experiences as a therapist and the philosophy of the Mental Health Recovery movement. Please drop by and leave a comment if you’d like.

Daily Prompt: Silver Linings – Meet your Self where you are!

freerangestock.com

I used to consider the phrase ” Look for the silver lining” to be a pointless platitude. Upon further consideration, I can now report that I have changed my opinion.  For today’s Daily Prompt, we are asked to  Write about something you consider “ugly” — war, violence, failure, hatred — but try to find beauty, or a sense of hope, in your thoughts.

Let me being by saying that the film The Silver Linings Playbook immediately came to mind. I am a therapist who has worked with many people who are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, so naturally I would be drawn to this film. Then there’s Bradley Cooper…….  Next are a few synchronicities thrown in for good measure. Matthew Quick, the author of the novel, based the story in Collingswood , NJ. This lovely town is about five minutes or so from my childhood home. The film was shot in Upper Darby, PA, not far from my current hometown, Philly. In an earlier post, I mentioned I have eaten at the now famous Llanerch Diner, where a pivotal scene between Pat and Tiffany takes place. https://lindalitebeing.wordpress.com/2013/05/22/youre-like-epically-awesome-man-the-award/

What I discovered from watching the film and reading the book afterwards, is that Pat (Bradley Cooper) achieved his goal of finding his silver lining. He did not succeed in reuniting with his ex-wife. What he did do is reinvent himself and transformed his life. Through his friendship with Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), his therapeutic alliance with his therapist, and his refusal to give up, he forged a new path forward. While his past connections with his dysfunctional family and his ex-wife were challenging to transcend, his commitment to dancing, love of the Eagles and vision of tomorrow kept him focused. While disappointments and struggles continue, Pat discovers that he is resilient and begins to step into a larger version of himself.

Speaking of stepping, my attendance today at a debut performance for Girls on the Move Germantown 2013 was filled with a plethora of silver linings. Moving Creation founder Emily Nussdorfer explains the importance of this program:

Imagine the future of our communities if all our youth are supported to find meaning and purpose for their lives. Imagine what our future would be like if all youth have the opportunity and skills with which to build their life from that place of creative purpose. What interesting, innovative and fulfilling possibilities could exist in our world as a result! The current devastating statistics of youth violence, suicide, anorexia, bulimia, obesity, addictions, school truancy and drop out rates, early pregnancy and disease would be reduced to a bad memory.

Today’s performance was such a treat. Family, friends, and supporters assembled at Germantown Friends School to see a fashion show, step routine, poetry readings, and hip hop dance number. These five young women captivated the audience with their courage, creativity, emotional vulnerability, and luminousness.  I was moved to tears and grateful to be part of the celebration.

Synchronicities were also present for me today while sitting in that auditorium. I have attended meeting for worship a few yards away at Germantown Meeting. I had worked for many years at a program 2 blocks away in the heart of Germantown. The girls spent some time together in retreat at Pendle Hill, a sacred place I hold close to my heart. It comes as no surprise that so many connections abound. I have been a fan of Emily and her program for years. She is a wonderful soul who exudes enthusiasm and great love for her girls and their communities.

So in case you are wondering, how these stories tie together, the answer is presence. Both Pat and the Girls on the Move were able to put aside negative beliefs and social conditioning in order to start anew. They did not deny their history. They learned to create new beginnings by taking action in the moment. As a social worker, I was repeatedly taught to meet my clients where they are at. This basically means to accept someone exactly where they are and proceed from this point. I believe this practice is important if you want to transcend your limitations and create a new vision.  Meeting your Self where you are is likely to assist in the promotion of positive self-care. Combine self-care with a strong support system and an active spiritual life and the possibilities are limitless. (yes I know, another Bradley Cooper movie – Limitless)

So I now see that with some effort and an enlightened perspective, silver linings are quite likely to manifest. Add a bit of magic and creativity, and you are on your way……
