Peace Among the Ruins

I am at peace. I woke up this way after a long uneventful sleep. Many hours later, this feeling nurtures my soul. I could attribute it to the new moon conjoining my natal moon ( 1 degree away) and Jupiter retrograding tomorrow exactly conjunct my natal sun. But I do not think it has anything to do with it!

Every so often I enter this spaciousness and one of the gifts at my disposal is to carry over my dream life residue into my waking life. This is not easy to describe, but if you are a “dreamer”, you will understand.

I attribute this blessing as a grace that may have arrived because I allowed myself to feel my pain and grief. I have been pummeled by the sudden deaths of Anthony Bourdain and a former patient. I see these losses as unnecessary and tragic. But guess what, we do not get to judge.

I have found myself reciting the Serenity Prayer often these past few days:

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

I am also moved to include a quote that I find helpful in time of tragedy:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Leonard Cohen

Sometimes we become immersed in an experience the dwells outside of time, space, astrology and it is seemingly paradoxical. A few days before the pummeling began I saw a job advertisement to run programming for a Grief program. While it seemed in some ways like an unlikely fit, my guidance nudged me with a quiet whisper. Only a couple of days after I emailed the organization, I was contacted for a phone interview. I was quite surprised since I did not seem a logical choice. The interview took place less than a day after I learned of my former patient’s death. I carried on with the interview anyway and allowed myself to just go with the flow. I was given feedback that I would bring a lot to the position. While I do not know where this will take me, I follow my nudges more and more each day. I am living proof of someone who can hold sadness in one hand and hope in the other. I threw out my back on Monday, yet I feel less restriction today.

What I want to convey to you dear readers, is that paradox is not an anomaly and that we can all heal and recover. It does not mean that I have finished grieving. It does mean that if you can read my words, you are still most likely alive! I do not know about anyone else, but I plan to live my life with passion and exuberance. This is not about spiritual bypass, but about gratitude for having the gift of spiritual embodiment into form.  While chaos swirls around and life is anything but smooth or certain, peace does prevail and vulnerability is a strength.

Blessings to you on this New Gemini Moon!

Venus Stationing in Capricorn Conjunct Pluto – You and I

Here’s a Christmas treat from litebeing chronicles for you all to savor with some eggnog, hot cocoa, or whatever your heart desires. It is a “classic” post from 2014 about Venus, Saturn/ Cap and Pluto ( among other things). It seems to be quite fitting as Venus conjoins Saturn in Capricorn today. Venus will be catching up again with Pluto on 1/9/18.

While the events of 2014 don’t exactly mirror the present moment, there are a few themes that do ring true. As I contemplate the nature of love and being loved on this day of endless, eternal love, allow me to wish you more light and joy than ever before. <3<3<3

Thank you for the overwhelmingly positive response to my Awakening post. Reading and responding to your comments was very emotionally moving for me. I was going to blog about Venus Retrograde much sooner, but thinking about and finally writing about my spiritual opening consumed all of my psychic energy. So I decided to post now in the wake of the Venus station , which is extremely close to Pluto. While you read this post, I invite you to ponder your experience with the Venus retrograde and current station with Pluto. I was going to title this post “Are We Having Fun Yet?”,  but decided to take a less cynical view. Please let me know if you indeed have been having fun, or perhaps shed a few tears over the past month. I really hope to hear from some of my male readers to get their unique perspectives on this fascinating…

A Selection of True Awakening Experiences Part II: Litebeing Rising

the-mysterious-boat-1.jpg!HalfHD

This article is my contribution to Barbara’s challenge, A Selection of True Awakening Experiences ~ Part II. This new compilation of material will also be assembled into a free E book for all to enjoy. To familiarize yourself with my initial story, please read about it here. To download the original E book, you can download it now or click on the book icon on the right sidebar at your leisure.

First off, I would like to mention that I did not follow the exact instructions with my initial contribution. Just to clarify, my initial piece was not about my current journey.  Rather, I shared my recollections of a profoundly mystical experience that took place in 2005. I did not address my state of consciousness circa 2014. I do not think I considered awakening or ascension when I wrote my post. The idea of soul ascension was not on my radar.

So much has shifted for me since then.

In this second installment, I will share some of my soul’s awakening journey between 2014 and today, plus some other takeaways that may offer inspiration and insight. With both some hesitance and excitement, I offer you a glimpse into the workings of this ever-changing litebeing.

So let’s delve into herstory:

When we last left our heroine, it was early 2006 and she had just quit her secure employment of 18 years. She was so excited about the future and intermittently buzzing from her encounters with James. Transiting Neptune was conjunct her natal ascendant ( house of self) and her inner mystic was resurfacing. Life was a blank canvas, brimming with possibilities..

Here is a brief excerpt from my initial story, where I conclude with some observations and lingering questions:

The dawn was breaking within my being and the light was beginning to enter my awareness. I was barely waking to what waits beyond the physical plane. The entanglement was both between myself and this young man , and  also occurring at the quantum level. Was this awakening fleeting, ephemeral and anomalous? Was it a miracle in the purest sense of the word? Am I still wondering what more can happen as Neptune continues to spend many more years in my 1st house?

These lingering questions will serve as the blueprint for today’s article, paving the way for reflection and clarity.

Was this awakening fleeting, ephemeral and anomalous?

It is quite the challenge to summarize my journey over the past two years, not to mention the last ten years ( 2006 – 2016) where I began the transition to overhaul my career and overall identity. But I will try my best to describe how I arrived at my present destination. Destination, destiny, hmmm, they have the same root; to make firm or establish.

My awakening is definitely not fleeting, ephemeral or anomalous.  I am still barely waking. The more I experience, the less I know. Humility has definitely taken root within my consciousness. I take far less for granted and that is a good thing. Intense peak experiences are absolutely rare and transitory. I highly valued the somewhat occasional extreme mystical openings that have graced my life. My ideas about these topics have shifted since then.  I think that it took many years for me to see that over – the – top, trippy, transcendental episodes are not necessarily the bread and butter of spiritual evolution. I thought that the goal was to get as high as possible for as long as possible. Much of my life is filled with oh so subtle wonder. Bizarre transcendental happenings are part of my life, but not on a regular basis. But synchronicity is a daily visitor and the more I acknowledge it, the more plentiful is its presence.

melancholy-1876.jpg!Blog

Was it a miracle in the purest sense of the word?

This is a tough question to answer. Initially I was referring to my cosmic meeting with James that I explored here. I will now address it from the perspective of my ability to integrate the energies on the path to awakening. From 2002 through 2006 and up until the present, I have had many a dark night. One could label it depression, dysthymia, dark night, or some other nomenclature. The labels do not make any difference at all. These are intermittent periods of extreme doubt, sadness, disconnection from Source, and/or profound powerlessness. My journey has not been linear by any means. It has been more cyclical in nature.

What has changed for me lately is that I do not dwell in any one emotional state for very long. I still feel anger, resentment, isolation, joy, confusion, bliss, empathy, or neutrality, but they dissipate rather quickly. However, I would characterize this current season as one of illness, loss, confusion, and frustration. However, my connection to Source is quite strong and that is what makes the difference for me.  I do feel a bit lost and tired though, but not forgotten or unloved. In some ways, my life has never been as arduous as it is now. And yet, it is also incredibly exciting and mysterious.

There lies the miracle for me.

Am I still wondering what more can happen as Neptune continues to spend many more years in my 1st house?

For the astrologers: As I mentioned in the beginning of this article, Transiting Neptune was conjunct my Ascendant in the summer of 2005. It is interesting to note that James has that placement natally. So one could surmise that I manifested someone to mirror that transit for me. My 1st house is very large as it covers half of Aquarius, all of Pisces, and the beginning of Aries. Neptune will remain in my 1st house until 2026. So this concentrated energy of fantasy, communion, and mystical essence has just begun to alter my awareness and melt into my soul.

Certain significant progressions have also impacted my journey. As my progressed Ascendant moved from Aries to Taurus, I became more focused on how Pluto/Scorpio affects my interactions with others. I also became more interested in family and nurturing as I was about to become an aunt for the first time.

When my progressed sun moved from Sagittarius to Capricorn, life became more serious and purposeful. With both my ascendant and sun now progressed into the Earth element, my focus had turned towards more responsibility with a call to leadership, substantial friendships/partnerships, and a renewed admiration for the natural world. Examples include my sacred encounters with the animal kingdom, power places, and a stronger appreciation for Gaia.

Significant Takeaways

From the Refiner’s fire into a river of love

The past 2 years have been a continuation of spiritual “tests” regarding shaping me into a purer version of my Self. Losses have been many, including loss of professional identity, steady sustainable income, robust health,  family members, friends, mentors, and animal companions. This refining process has been somewhat unexpected and definitely traumatic in a variety of ways. What has sustained me is a generosity of spirit from many sources. Some were surprising, to say the least.

One could say that my ability to intuit has led me to be more bold and open. This boldness has opened me up to new people, places, and things that were previously out of reach. While I still tilt closer to introvert on the introvert/ extrovert continuum, I have become more at ease interacting with a multitude of individuals online and offline. I am increasingly being fueled by these exchanges, both creatively and emotionally, not to mention spiritually.

Leaving my city employment brought me back to working full-time in the mental health field once again. The response I received from clients reassured me that I still “had it”, the gifts of compassion and healing I had acquired earlier down the road. Working with creative therapists for many years unleashed a desire in me to re-engage with my inner artist. That re-engagement eventually led to blogging back in 2013.

Lighting the spark of creation

This creative spark has always resided within. The question was, what to do with it? I was tired of simply being a ” friend of writers “. It was time to be a writer once more. By 2014 I was clearly established as a blogger and now working as a therapist and manager of a recovery program. These opportunities have led me to become more interested in how to combine my creative impulses with spiritual service work. My current passion is offering awakening support to those in need, along with expansion of my astrology practice and writing projects. These desires to lead and expand my sights has been guided by spiritual practices and friends new and old. They are nurtured by immersion in the natural world, music, teachers like Matt Kahn and Lee Harris, travel, altered states ( dreams, meditation) and by interaction with other like-minded people. Many of these unofficial guides have been bloggers on this platform. You know who you are.

Thank You

Conclusions

I do not know where this will take me. This needs more time and thought. Or maybe not. I will simply state that I do not know. It is more than outer purpose or creative spark or the stripping away of material goods, loved ones or roles. Seeker, mystic, lightworker, starseed ; they all seem limiting. I will just continue to keep breathing and see what arises.

A musical finale ~David Bowie’s passing is still a difficult pill to swallow. While he remains an enigma, I am certain that he knew me. As a rebellious yet idealistic teen, I played the Hunky Dory album over and over and over, looking for answers. The song Oh You Pretty Things has a catchy melody with intriguing lyrics, but was certainly over my head. In the wake of Bowie’s death, revisiting the lyrics triggered a volcanic reaction to my core. The song is both darkness and light, as is the Earthly experience. Please give it a listen here and you will understand how his influence has informed my awakening.

September ~ Behold the Parfait

Ahh, finally September. The idea of September comforts me. Maybe it has to do with the Earth Wind and Fire song of the same name, or because it signals the end of humid oppressive weather. Maybe I associate this month with hope.  I am just so ready to move on. But to where, to what?

StrawberrySundae (1)

When I consider my evolution, the parfait comes to mind. The image above is a strawberry sundae, but you get the idea. It is about the different layers. Reading about parallel universes and varying levels of consciousness have influenced me greatly over the summer. While I draw no conclusions, I see how this metaphor can be effective. Take yesterday for example: I wake up from a positive loving dream. I feel open, confident, and cared for. In waking life, all sorts of shit hits the fan. Most of it stems from dealing with people who lack consciousness. Now I understand there are times when I am one of those people, but I am talking about people who you want to trust, but show you otherwise. You give them the benefit of the doubt and you stretch your patience. You see the beauty within them and hope for the best. When you reach your boundary, you express your feelings with truth and some diplomacy. You receive defensiveness, no accountability, and anger in return.

Have any of you experienced this?

With Venus about to complete her retrograde cycle, I have been feeling sadness deepen within me. This sadness has inspired me in the examining of past relationships. I keep coming back to the quote ” When people show you who they are, believe them.” I learned years ago not to accept one’s words over actions. We are much more than either words or actions, but they are indicators of our level of awareness at a point in time and space.

I am happy to report that I am not judging myself for giving people the benefit of the doubt. I lead with my intuition and I would do so again. When I reflect on past romances and consider excuses, manipulations, and blatant dishonesty, I feel less bitter.

People are flawed and we do the best we can. Like Matt Kahn says, it is not about just hanging out with people at your level or trying to convince others that you know the way. Have you ever called a liar a liar? Have you ever called a manipulator a manipulator? It accomplishes nothing. I refuse to see people who behave this way as reflections of me anymore. It is not that simple and never was.

When I notice how my big open heart invites some to take advantage, I fight the tendency to close down. I enjoy being full of love. My Dexter taught me well. In his absence I truly feel the sadness of being disconnected. I have so few people in my life that really know me and offer me unconditional love. I could adopt another cat and be done with it. I probably will adopt when I am ready.

But in this transitional period I travel from layer to layer. I allow the extreme sadness to stay with me until it dissipates. I enjoy my dream state and meditative states of being. Which layer is more real? I don’t know.   At some levels of consciousness, all is well exactly as it is. I grasp the panoramic view where my soul is delighting in my incarnation. I continue to be grateful for the big and little things, the organic dates and fresh guacamole, the magical powers of probiotics, an unexpected breeze, a smile that appears on my face…

Wishing you a multilayered September full of revelations and love.

Everything old is new again and again..

It is often the simple things that lead to awakening. Just driving around my neighborhood yesterday I noticed a new store that just opened. The name of the store is Serendipity.

According to Wikipedia, Serendipity means a “fortunate happenstance” or “pleasant surprise”. It was coined by Horace Walpole in 1754. In a letter he wrote to a friend Walpole explained an unexpected discovery he had made by reference to a Persian fairy tale, The Three Princes of Serendip. The princes, he told his correspondent, were “always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of”.

I would disagree with this definition,  just ever so slightly. We are always in quest of something on the soul level. I was not looking for a new store yesterday, but it caught my attention because the word is one that I would recognize as a symbol. The soul and higher self is always alert and awake, gently guiding our physical being towards mastery.

So in honor of the Easter holy-day and the warm breeze streaming in on this sunny Eclipse Saturday, I am republishing this post Everything Old is New Again. I included a few more favorites to the mix that reveal everyday magic.  Have a simply awakening weekend!

My 200th Post ~ Power in Action

200 posts!

WordPress tells me that this will be my 200th post and I am astonished! It is worthy of a celebration. So I say let’s celebrate the power of creation. While Mars is still in Scorpio, power seems to be a timely topic.

I have often contemplated the true meaning of power and the best definition I have is

 to influence

I have given this a tremendous deal of thought and I stand by it for now. I could tell you what I used to associate with power, but I rather not. I am satisfied with my present definition and I think it is helpful as we continue to organize ourselves more as a collective force on this planet.

So now what? Well, the collective will stems from the projections of each individual. OK. So this particular individual meditated tonight and happily got into the flow. Lately I have been noticing and focusing on small but primary green dots while meditating. This practice has been very helpful in keeping me centered and attentive. Tonight I used a ” bonus” meditation from Deepak Chopra and Oprah that arrived in my email today. The theme was power as an element in accessing the flow of life. I found the mantra particularly helpful and I would share it here if it was given in written form.

I was curious to see how the color green comes into play. I did some research and discovered that the color green is associated with the heart chakra. In tonight’s meditation we were attending to the third chakra. This is contained within the solar plexus. The heart chakra is not the seat of power, but it is where creativity reigns. ( Leo reference, yes!)  So perhaps for myself, creative energy leads to power.

While I paid attention to my breath and the mantra, the green dot began to transform before my eyes.  I was watching a movie in my head with my inner eyes and it was peaceful and organic. I saw many flying gentle creatures. They remind me of hypnagogia – visual hallucinations that occur prior to falling asleep.

Some looked like fairies

Others looked like birds

This image was taken with Kirlian photography. It is freaky how close this resembles what I actually saw. These images conjured up the notion of power in action.

What is also curious is that recently I have had dreams on two separate occasions that featured this bright green hue. I wonder how my meditation is influencing my dream life ??

When I reflect on my writing over time, I realize that I receive inspiration from so many sources. Often the impact of other writers is minimized. I want to pay homage to those who have empowered me to write honestly and fearlessly. Some examples include Jung, John Weir Perry, Marianne Williamson, Rumi, Michael Lutin, Edie Weinstein , Jen Elam , Robert Graham, Marcelle Martin , and so many of my blogger community here at WordPress. It is exhilarating to let go of competitive urges ( Mars in Scorpio) and rather give credit to those who enter our orbit. That reminds me of another influence, Pharrell. He speaks often about how the numerous people who supported him and positively influenced him play a major role in his creative artistry and ultimate success.

Inspiration is limitless and I wonder if power is also limitlessly available to human beings? I am not certain, but I will continue to follow the lite in whatever form it takes and see where it leads me.

Musings ~ Fresh Start

Today the sun is on my sun/moon midpoint – 1 degree Virgo. According to Dane Rudhyar, here is the interpretation:

PHASE 151 (VIRGO 1°): IN A PORTRAIT, THE SIGNIFICANT FEATURES OF A MAN’S HEAD ARE ARTISTICALLY EMPHASIZED.

KEYNOTE: The capacity to picture to oneself clearly the salient features and the overall meaning of any life situation.

This is the first stage of the thirty-first five-fold sequence of symbols and its Keyword is DISCRIMINATION. Implied in discrimination is both analysis and intuition. The mind separates and identifies — and unfortunately often exaggerates — what makes a person or a situation different from another; but the intuitive responses of the whole person to what confronts him or her is also essential, for what matters is not only my or your “difference,” but the place and function this difference occupies in the organic pattern of the evolution of “humanity as a whole,” i.e. of Man.

I think this interpretation is an accurate read on the interplay of my natal sun and moon. Basically, the sun/moon midpoint is the integration or dance between the two luminaries ( lights). As a litebeing, this is a good thing. I have made many friends with birthdays around this time of year, so wishing a wonderful solar return to all of you – past and present. To locate your sun/ moon midpoint, find a reliable astrology software program or consult an astrologer. Or if you have some astrological knowledge, visit this page at astro.com and it will produce a midpoint grid for you:

Tomorrow we have a new moon in Virgo. It does not have the best of aspects as it opposes Neptune, but it is a new beginning. I am not doing a new moon post today. For a good one, I choose Emily:

Don’t know about you, but I am in need of a fresh start..

Announcements:

I changed the category selection for all published posts because my old system was a hot mess. Now each post has one category. Hope this will make things more orderly ( Virgo).

Thanks for all the wonderful comments lately, especially after I took a pause from the 9 to 5 experiment. Your commentary is so precious to me. Thanks also for the great response to the Sweet and Salty post. It still amazes me to see what excites people about my writing. This is not an official blogging challenge, but I am curious what people are doing with their symbols. What are your symbols? Are they morphing into signs?  Are you noticing them more places? Where? How? Why?

Once I start to formulate questions, look out!

get-attachment (21)

So, now what?

Well, I have more award posts that are long overdue, a Collision post that is brewing, several Returning Home posts marinating slowly, something perhaps on how I spent my Summer non-vacation, etc

I also need to heal and let myself BE. This may include art, meditation, sleep, computer games, reading, breathing, dreaming……

Until I post again, I will be looking for seashells and German chocolate cake and catching up with all of you in one form or another.

Interview – You don’t know a thing about me, well maybe?

On July 25th my interview was featured on Ky’s blog  kygrabowski Spotlight series. This was a very exciting time for me because it was my very first published interview. I am posting it here so that it can be seen by new readers or those who were on hiatus over the summer. Preparation for this interview was an incredibly personal and sometimes grueling process for me, so I hope that you find my occasionally verbose – translation – long-winded 🙂  answers interesting and informative. I welcome all questions and comments as I continue to become more authentic and transparent, moment by moment.

Spotlight

Here’s what Spotlight is about; it’s an interview that promotes you! It will feature questions that are formatted to your needs. Questions will be focused on your work, upcoming work and some personal [but not intrusive] questions for your fans to get to know you more!

Today features

Litebeing

1.   Tell us about yourself

My blog persona is litebeing, creator of litebeing chronicles. I grew up along the East coast and have lived in the Philadelphia area since college. I am a licensed Social Worker and have worked in Child Welfare and Mental Health for most of my career. Currently I work as a psychotherapist in private practice.  I have been fascinated by astrology since age 7 or 8 and was already giving astrological advice to my friends in sixth grade! Astrology and helping others has been a constant thread throughout my life. I started blogging about 6 months ago and absolutely love it! My trusty cat (and sidekick) Dexter is usually by my side. If not joined at my hip, he’s scrunched up in his fleecy bed.

Dexter

2.   How did you get into blogging?

I had seen the film “Julie and Julia” and identified with the lead character who was a writer that wasn’t writing. I was her; I knew it in my bones. I loved the passion she put into her blog and the film’s message really stayed with me. The seed was planted while watching that film.

Late last year while I was enjoying some of my friends’ blogs, I thought to myself “I could do this!” I was also experiencing some exciting changes in my spiritual journey that I wanted to share with others.

3.   What are the pros and cons to blogging?

Blogs are a great medium because you can get incredible exposure and potentially instantaneous feedback. That was a mouthful; I can be quite verbose when no one’s looking!  I don’t really see any cons to blogging, once you figure out how to format your posts and master the technical aspects. If you run out of ideas, the daily post from WordPress can be a great tool. I wrote a couple of daily posts myself and it was really a lot of fun!

4.   What kind of things that you haven’t blogged about do you want to blog about in the future?

I want to include more astrology, poetry, and transpersonal psychology in my blog. I will also expand on some of my mystical experiences in greater detail when the time is right. I don’t blog in a planned way, so I cannot usually say what will come next. I prefer to let the writing flow organically. I have recently added some of my nature photography and plan to take more pictures. As an extremely visual person, it is important to me to create a pretty blog. While I am quite an amateur photographer, I do have a knack for framing a shot. Adding my own images can enhance my stories in a way that is unique and personal.

5.   What do you hope readers understand about your blog?

That is it ever-changing and that I like to revise formatting and content to reflect my current state of mind or mood. That this project is a true manifestation of one of my life purposes, to simply write. Also that what I write IS true. If I am writing about something that happened to me, it really did happen. I look for authenticity in other artists and strive to live to that standard for myself.

6.   How did you come up with the theme of your blog and or what you will blog about?

I go by the name litebeing and created the blog litebeing chronicles on 1-11-13. I picked that date because it was the first new moon of the calendar year. However that is only part of the story. I have been seeing numerical sequences of 111 and 1111 for several months. I got the idea that these numbers come to me as symbols of hope and loving guidance. So it seemed appropriate to use 1-11-13 as the time to launch this new project. The name litebeing came from my underutilized twitter account. I wanted to use lightbeing and it was taken, so I chose litebeing instead. This name fits in with my spiritual journey. After a long dark night of the soul episode I realized that I wasn’t quite as enlightened or awake as I thought I was. So litebeing is a more accurate snapshot of my current state of consciousness.

The theme of litebeing chronicles is a glimpse into my everyday life, showing how the light shines through on a moment- to- moment basis. The light may vary from a tiny flicker to a strong ray to a magnificent rainbow to a blinding shaft of white light. The blog also chronicles my reactions to the cosmic weather. The reactions may be in the form of poetry, storytelling, art, photography, or simply musings. I occasionally veer off in other directions, but have remained true to the theme.

7.   Favorite blog post? Of yours and or someone else’s?

I am partial to my two ongoing series, Collisions and Returning HomeCollisions is a series on my personal tales of synchronicity and other mystical adventures. Returning Home showcases different mechanisms that can accelerate a higher vibration and inner awakening.  I also really like how my Calling All Angels post came together. It was fun to weave different elements of my life into one overarching theme such as Angels.  I also love reading posts about travel, art, dreams, film, altered states of being, astrology, mysticism, etc.  Authenticity in storytelling is very important to me. So reading about someone’s struggles and triumphs will touch me deeply if told from an authentic place.

8.  How do you figure out what you’re going to write about?

I see myself as a planner in general. With the blog, however, I have become much more relaxed. Ideas come to me as my everyday life unfolds. Now, I may see a film and decide I’ll blog about that or I may become inspired by another blogger’s post, but most of the time, stuff just happens and the wheels begin to turn.

9. What advice can you offer to people who may want to start blogging?

Have fun! Enjoy the process and don’t stress out about it! Get to know other bloggers. I like to check out the blogs of those who like and comment on my posts.  Often they become part of my beloved community. Do not obsess over statistics if you can resist the temptation. 10. In your post Subtle Beginnings you mention you grew up without Christmas – did you celebrate something else?

When we were little, we would get Christmas presents under our beds. This was due to the Santa Claus factor. We always celebrated Hanukah, although my mother grew up with Christmas. I remember she enjoyed playing Christmas carols on the piano during the holidays.

11.  In the same post you talk about noticing things around you – what are some of your favorite things you notice in your life?

I am acutely aware of nature, especially while walking in my neighborhood. I also enjoy the randomness of songs on my car radio. Lately I have been looking at the license plates and stickers on cars in front of me while driving. I enjoy noticing signs and symbols of all kinds. Often signs and symbols hide in plain sight, just waiting to be discovered.

12.  In your post Silver Linings you speak a lot about your interest and past dealings with mental illness – have you always been interested in this topic?

My curiosity about life and people in general stems from early childhood. A class on Human Behavior in high school started me wondering about a career as a therapist. I learned about Abraham Maslow and self-actualization, and was very curious about human development. I also wanted to learn more about what Maslow described as peak experiences.  I recall doing a research project with a classmate on left-handedness.  We both were interested because we were left-handed. This project made a huge impact on me. I think that being different predisposed me to wanting to understand individual difference. My love of astrology and personality types led to a fervent interest in theories of personality.  I am just as fascinated about our collective gifts that coexist with the maladaptations.

13. Following the above question, what advice and or tips if you have any can you suggest to people dealing with these issues, things that can help them adjust their lives better?

If someone is feeling powerless or out of control regarding their emotions, thoughts, and/or coping skills, I would strongly suggest they reach out to someone they trust such as a doctor or alternative health practitioner, mentor, spiritual / religious elder or mental health professional. Sometimes it is easier to seek out a mentor or a pastor before a therapist or psychiatrist. What matters is that you know yourself well enough to sense when your own inner resources are insufficient. Asking for help is a strength, despite the multitude of opposing messages from society at large. I like Brene Brown’s ideas about vulnerability and am encouraged by this concept catching on in popularity.

14. Your post, a poem titled “The Wind.” is a very well put together post. What inspired it, and what inspires you to write poetry like this one?

Thank you. I was inspired by a loved one whom I was missing. He was traveling and I knew that it was likely we won’t see each other for a very long time. The film The New World reminded me of the differences and similarities between us. It also reminded me of the beautiful place in which we met. However this poem was not about a typical love story. It was about how a greater divine force can pull together two souls, and that the collision of the two can create a mystery and awakening that transcends romantic love.

15.  When did you discover writing?

I came into this world with a vibrant imagination. This gift has often been my saving grace. Writing early on became a vehicle for fashioning my imagination into a tangible form. In grade school my teacher noticed that I was good at building stories around our spelling words. I also was a strong reader and excelled at spelling. So you could say it was a perfect storm of good language skills and an active inner life.

16. How has writing changed you as a person?

My diaries in high school helped me survive some difficult years. I found a strategy for processing emotions and working out conflicts that I could depend upon. My journals are like old friends; reliable, comfortable, always there for you. I know my love of writing influenced my work with clients. I will often integrate writing into the therapeutic process, via journaling, affirmations, poetry, etc. I am fortunate to have had many clients come to therapy as lifelong writers.

17. What is your favorite part about writing?

After the ideas are set and the words being to flow….. I really love the creative process, especially when my intuition is informing my choices rather than my rational mind. I find it very exciting to integrate the flow of ideas together cohesively and with emotional intelligence. Writing is such a source of joy and can often have a cathartic effect for me.

18. What plans do you have for the future in your writing?

I am very interested in the intersection of mystical experiences and perceptual changes evident in psychotic episodes. Both states of being feature an altered sense of reality. I want to do more research into where the two overlap and where the two diverge. I am not even sure that discrete differences exist. My sense is that other factors strongly influence one’s judgment of and reactions to altered states of consciousness. Other factors would include one’s upbringing, socioeconomic status, ethnicity/culture, educational level, geographic location, and spiritual/religious orientation. I delved into some of this material in graduate school but there is so much more I want to explore. This could be my book!

19.  What kind of books do you like?

I really adore non-fiction and biography or semiautobiographical works.  When I was much younger I read mostly romance, classics, and science fiction. I truly enjoyed reading Dickens because his style evoked rich visual imagery. I am very visual in nature, so I prefer authors who cater to this preference. Lately I look for stories that offer inspiration and broaden my understanding of complex material. But please make them entertaining and unique so that I will keep reading! I tend to read many books at once.

20. What advice can you offer other writers?

I don’t have much advice to share except to believe in your creative spark, set a structured routine for yourself, and write for the joy of writing. Balancing writing with all of life’s demands requires more than good intentions. Please write for yourself first. I will never forget this high school teacher who harshly criticized my Three Act play assignment. She said that no one would be interested in my story but me! I took this criticism to heart and worried that my writing was not relatable. I think that I overcompensated by paying less attention to my gut instincts while writing. Eventually I realized that I write because I am a writer, not to please other people. Writers clearly want readers, I know this one does, but most readers are attracted to artists who can follow through with their vision. “Know thyself” and “to thine own self be true” are classic quotes because they convey wisdom and truth over the course of time. So striving to embody these ideals makes sense to me.

21.  Share with us some of your interests

I love reading, travel, music, drawing, being in nature, exotic food, walking and movies. I have recently rediscovered photography and am enjoying this amateur pursuit. I am also revisiting dream work by participating in two dream groups.

22.  What do you find is the hardest part of writing?

Staying focused. I tend to be pretty organized but can get quite distracted if I am writing while online. I also lean towards perfectionism so it is crucial that I know when to leave a finished piece alone. Blogging regularly is helping me become more disciplined in this area.

23.  What got you into supporting mental illness?

The philosophy of deinstitutionalization came into vogue when I first started out in the field. This is the notion that people with psychological or developmental challenges tend to thrive living within their communities, rather than being whisked away to hospitals and residential facilities. My work as a social worker and therapist evolved over the years and my attitudes are shaped by my work. I had some excellent supervisors and mentors along the way that influenced my understanding of mental illness. Yet I learned the most directly from those on my caseload. I discovered that the systems in place to protect people: child welfare system, criminal justice system, mental health system, often created more harm than good. The traumas people experience as a result of being incarcerated, committed to a psychiatric hospital, or living in unsafe, unpredictable, circumstances are often worse that those they may have ensured prior to being diagnosed.  This idea of community integration operates best when people are encouraged to focus on their entire self instead of an illness or disability. The alternative to the medical or pathology-focused model led to the creation of the Mental Health Recovery movement. Recovery focuses on holistic, empowering strategies and approaches to living based on the unique individual. The values include hope, meaning, and personal choice. This movement is alluded to, but not directly mentioned in my Silver Linings post. I wrote about the movement in my Guest post on Resilience for Amber Skye Forbes’s blog.

24. You offer counseling and astrology services; can you explain what that is all about?

I like to incorporate my astrology knowledge and my intuitive skills into my counseling practice. My objective is to help people develop and grow more into their true selves. We do this by working together in identifying and cultivating the innate capacities found in the natal astrology chart. I have worked with clients separately using traditional counseling techniques or astrological consultations. Yet I find that combining the two modalities is truly the best of both worlds. Astrology is holistic, non-judgmental, spirituality-based and person-centered. It is an outstanding approach for helping others with self-discovery, relationship issues, vocational counseling, addiction, low self-esteem, unresolved grief, etc.

25.   What can people expect from you if they receive this experience?

I provide an astrological chart based on time and place of birth and an initial chart interpretation. The client decides the focus and scope of the service. I can provide a one time session, regularly scheduled sessions or anything in between. I see the work as healing and transformational in nature, operating from strengths as opposed to deficits. People report the service as empowering, powerful, healing, often intense, and enlightening.

26.  What advice can you offer people if they want to do what you do?

I think that with both astrology and counseling, one must be born with raw potential. Education and training are important and will refine and expand one’s expertise and confidence, but astrologers and therapists cannot be manufactured. You have to really enjoy people and be incredibly self-aware.  I like to use my counseling skills when I practice astrology. Not all astrologers are counselors or therapists, but they can benefit from learning reflective listening skills. One must have the innate abilities like empathy, intuition, strong analytical skills, comfort with the symbolic world, and people skills to succeed in both professions. Evidence – based practices are very popular in the mental health profession currently, and will probably continue to grow in popularity. While I agree that practicing techniques that deliver positive treatment outcomes has advanced the field and improved quality of life for so many, psychotherapy is not purely technique-driven. Artistry is a large part of the profession and I certainly hope that creative people will continue to be valued within the helping/ healing professions.

28.  Promote your services in one sentence!

Let’s partner together to help you recognize, explore and manifest your possibilities.

29. What kind of observations do you make in your work? If you do.

Trust is essential to cultivating a therapeutic relationship. I see that many people hide who they are, especially from themselves. When trust has been developed, the road to healing becomes visible. True healing can begin as people find less need to hide.

Another common thread is the universal need for unconditional love. Most people want to give and receive love. At the end of the day, people want to be seen, heard, understood, and accepted. This desire to be truly known is universal and part of unconditional love. Astrological counseling is an effective way to help people integrate all aspects of themselves; to embrace the shadows and bring them into the light. With a strong inner foundation it is then possible to recognize and attract unconditional love into one’s life.

30.   What are you working on now?

I am focusing on my blog and expanding my astrology/counseling practice.
