Venus Stationing in Capricorn Conjunct Pluto – You and I

Here’s a Christmas treat from litebeing chronicles for you all to savor with some eggnog, hot cocoa, or whatever your heart desires. It is a “classic” post from 2014 about Venus, Saturn/ Cap and Pluto ( among other things). It seems to be quite fitting as Venus conjoins Saturn in Capricorn today. Venus will be catching up again with Pluto on 1/9/18.

While the events of 2014 don’t exactly mirror the present moment, there are a few themes that do ring true. As I contemplate the nature of love and being loved on this day of endless, eternal love, allow me to wish you more light and joy than ever before. <3<3<3

Tangled Up In Blue

Tangled up in Blue is one of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums ( Blood on the Tracks) by one of my favorite artists, the enigmatic poet Bob Dylan. As I deconstruct my dream life, alternate lives, and this present waking state in preparation for my challenge contribution,  this phrase presented itself. The song is a gem and conjures up many memories for me. It would be prominent in the soundtrack of my life if my life was a feature film. Clearly it would be independent and somewhat artsy…

seascape-with-large-sky-1860.jpg!Large

Tonight I literally feel tangled up in blue so I will let my art selection express my narrative for me. Immersing myself in time travel and the Mercury retrograde in Libra re-entering my house of partners ( which is currently quite crowded with Venus, Mars, and Jupiter) has resulted in minor melancholy, stormy seas, and iridescent sky scapes.

Great Mystery New Moon

So tonight is the second Aquarius new moon and a Black Moon at that! We go right to Sun and Moon in Pisces within hours of the lunation. Then tomorrow is the transition from the Chinese Year of the Horse to Year of the Sheep.

Whoa, I am exhausted just thinking about all these sweeping ex-changes! So much at once in the midst of the final looming Pluto Uranus square in March.

So I meditated and pulled a card for me and you.

37_greatmystery

This is such a great card for me ( and you). I have really been feeling lost, confused and excited all at once. There are so many  powerful transits affecting my chart as well as that of the collective. This new moon is conjunct my Chiron and opposite my chart ruler (Uranus). So let’s just say that I cannot feel any beginnings or endings. It is all one endless whoosh..

So as I am unable to discern what lies ahead ( or in front of me) today, I will allow myself to ride and glide along the oceanic waves. I will not resist, I will allow. Uranus and Neptune are hosting this party and they insist that we respect their power and intensity. In order to avoid electrocution, one must alter their vibration. There is no other alternative.

To honor Chiron ( who is currently in Pisces) is to allow wounds to surface and be healed. He is not for the faint of heart. Facing whatever appears is essential now.  Mystery does not want us to use limited the human mind and precious energy in a quest for the unfathomable. This fruitless search is a mere distraction from true purpose.

Now my purpose may take a different route than yours, but ultimately we are traveling together.

To be love in this world

Which brings me to Stevie Wonder, of course. While watching the Grammy Tribute Concert, I was struck by the poignant lyrics of As. This may have been written as a personal love song, but I see Spirit’s handiwork all over it. It addresses mystery, Divine purpose, and the law of Attraction. There are so many layers of meaning here. Interesting too is the choice of album cover for Songs in the key of Life. Such a lovely spiral  happens to graces the cover.

When I had a great awakening in 2005, I began hearing some old songs differently. Words and melodies would leap out to me in ways that underscored subtle truths. This was one of the songs that I heard in ” another key.”

Here are some of the lyrics that woke me up and opened my heart even wider:

Until the day is night and night becomes the day—ALWAYS
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away—ALWAYS
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4—ALWAYS
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Did you know that you’re loved by somebody?
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left—ALWAYS
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
I’ll be loving you forever
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through—ALWAYS
Until the day that you are me and I am you—AL~~~~~~WA~~
~~~~~AA~~~~~~~AA~~~~
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky~~~~~AA~~~~
~~~~AA~~~~~~~AA~~~~~~~~~AA~~~~~~~YS~~ALWAYS

We all know sometimes lifes hates and troubles
Can make you wish you were born in another time and space
But you can bet you life times that and twice its double
That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed
so make sure when you say you’re in it but not of it
You’re not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called Hell
Change your words into truths and then change that truth into love
And maybe our children’s grandchildren
And their great-great grandchildren will tell
I’ll be loving you

What do you hear?

Venus Stationing in Capricorn Conjunct Pluto – You and I

I am re-publishing this post because it includes some material on Venus in Capricorn. This is timely in light of Venus entering Capricorn yesterday. Venus is also approaching its meeting with Pluto so the Venus/Pluto themes still apply.  I hope you enjoy it. Comments are always appreciated!

My muse has begun to tap on my shoulder so new material may be arriving shortly..

Venus in Capricorn

Venus ( pictured above) is incredibly beautiful. I would also add that she is incredibly misunderstood. It takes years of living and loving from the heart to really embrace the Venusian energies. I want to start off with my understanding of Venus in Capricorn. When I first began to study horoscopes and interpret charts for others, I was quite fascinated with all the possible Venus placements. I do not think I really understood the value of Venus in Capricorn until recently.  While I do have natal Venus in my 1oth house, it is in Sagittarius. I will get to that later.   Back in 2006, my Sun progressed into Capricorn joining natal Jupiter and Saturn. Now Mercury has also joined this ” motley crew”  to make 4 planets in the land of Saturn. So I now have a better grasp of this magnificent placement.

Venus is Capricorn is not the cold , scheming business woman obsessed with her career and station in life. Oh no, there is much more that lurks in her heart. She loves the fragility and aesthetic pleasure found in form.  She also understands the importance of tempering love with patience and tolerance over time. Love does not usually come easily with this expression of Venus, but there is such appreciation and gratitude for love’s maturation over the course of time. Sometimes she chooses a younger lover, while at other junctures she looks to a more seasoned mate. She understands the value of quality over quantity, classics over trends. She revels in the lessons revealed from history ( or herstory). She finds romantic love to reignite her youth during her golden years, while many of her peers have succumbed to the wrath of old age.

My Venus

My Venus is in Sagittarius in the 1oth house. It is part of an often annoying yod configuration with my Mars in Cancer in the 6th house and my Aquarian Ascendant. It also very closely opposes my Moon in Gemini. Both the rulers of my Sun and Ascendant, Pluto and Uranus are in my 7th house. Venus rules my 8th house with Libra on the 8th house cusp. Pluto is conjunct the North Node. My 7th house ruler is the Sun in Scorpio conjunct Neptune and Mercury Retrograde in the 9th house. To the astrologers who are reading, you know that this equates to one hot mess! This is painfully true. Last night I began to read about Pluto in my newly acquired The Astrology of Fate by the über talented Liz Greene. The revelations I discovered here are extraordinary. Where was this book when I was a young woman? Here are some excerpts on Pluto in the 7th and Pluto/Venus:

Meeting Pluto in the seventh house, for example, mans meeting Moira ( the goddess of Fate) through the “other”.  Divorce is common, as are love triangles, painful rejections, death of a partner, and power battles. The variations are enormous, but the theme is single, relationships are the place where one is subjected to  something far more powerful and inevitable than one’s own will and choices. Sometimes the individual may elect to work with others who are caught up in Pluto’s web… Here we find the doctor, psychoanalyst, the psychiatrist and even the politician.

Pluto introduces Venus to what lies beneath the flowers and elegant gestures of romantic courtship.  The underpinning is not pretty and certainly not fair. Venus- Pluto also has a propensity for sexual triangles. These are neither fair or wished for, but they are a  fact of life. Love may be trans-formative, deepening, numinous, ecstatic and full of meaning and richness; and there is usually a fatality about it.

I always led with my Venus in Sag to the exclusion of Mars in homebody Cancer and Moon in the domestic 4th house. Venus in Sag does not think, it just goes for it! Regardless of all the times I analyzed decisions about romance, in the end my heart always prevailed. Venus in Sagittarius is impulsive, freedom loving, ridiculously idealistic, excitement -seeking and adventurous. When in the 10th house, she looks for romance in her calling, her destiny. Paired with Mars in the 6th, it inevitably leads to love/passion in the office. Over and over and over and over again….

While writing my post for Barbara’s Awakening Challenge, I paid close attention to the Venus Retrograde and began researching past significant Venus transits. I noticed that I have had a few powerful encounters during previous Venus retrograde cycles. I wrote about the 2004 transit in my story on “James”.  There were two others that I discovered during my Uranus to Sun transit as a teenager, and as I was having my Saturn Return at age 29. Funny how I had not attributed Venus’s influence on these events until now. I guess they were over-looked due to the huge impact these rare outer planet transits made on me. While the romances were important,  other more major life events were happening at the same time. I am not ready to write about these stories now, but let’s just say that the men I met were charismatic, creative, sensitive, and struggling with demons that  ultimately eclipsed what we shared in relationship.

Venus Retrograde 2013-2014

Venus went retrograde at 28 degrees Capricorn on December 21, 2013 and stationed at 13 degrees Capricorn on January 31, 2014. Pluto is currently at 12 degrees Capricorn. The action has taken place for me in my 12th house , finally moving to my 11th house to join my natal Saturn at 13 Capricorn. So this particular transit was about 12th house, Saturn and Pluto for me. I have been having recurring dreams for months about past partners. They have been mostly devoid of feeling for me while dreaming, Yet I would wake up disturbed to find these symbols dominating my dream life. Since this all started before the transit, I wondered what may have caused this pattern?  Michael Lutin has said that this current transit is tied to 2012 when Saturn was exalted in Libra.

This may partially explain my dreams and why I had a real-time visitation from a former love interest on 12-30-13. It was very bizarre for a variety of reasons. I quit a 5 year affiliation with my employer  during the 2012 Venus retrograde period. I have not seen any of my coworkers from there since I resigned. I met a man at that job in 2009 and we started up a heated flirtation shortly upon his arrival. It was an impossible situation and the connection eventually turned sour. I had also quit my long-term group practice in early December 2013. On December 30th I was meeting with a former client at a  local Starbucks. We met there with his permission since I no longer had office space at the practice.  I was facing the barista station and he was facing the wall. Towards the end of our meeting , my former crush shows up with his young son.  When they were passing by me on the way out, I decided to say hello. He introduced me to his son and was waiting for me to introduce him to  my former client. Because of confidentiality, I said nothing. My former client did introduce himself and they shook hands. I briefly caught up with him about the latest happenings at the office and  then said good bye. It was very awkward and unexpected. Yet it was comforting to realize that I no longer harbored any anger towards him. We both live in the same vicinity but have never run into one another before. What is much more bizarre is the connection between the men. When I was involved with my coworker in 2009, he and my client were going through similar issues. They also share the same Sun sign, are around the same age, and live near one another. I was experiencing some uncomfortable counter-transference at that particular time. None of this has any relevance now, except that when they shook hands, it felt like I was witnessing a thought form manifest. These two people in  very distinct sectors of my life were coming together out of my inner world and into the physical realm.

The rest of this transit was more about reliving my 2004-2005 drama in preparation for my Challenge post and sifting through the seemingly endless foray of dreams ” From Christmas Past.” The only other real-time event was watching the film  Her. This movie is about a man in the near future who falls in love with his computer OS (operating system). This film was so much more nuanced than I originally expected. The takeaway for me (Spoiler Alert) was when Samantha the OS breaks up with him. She and the other OSs decide to leave together in order to explore higher realms of consciousness. In one scene Samantha touchingly reveals to the lead character Theodore  how she is growing at such a rapid pace and cannot possibly love just one person. She tries unsuccessfully to describe the limitlessness of love. What I gleaned from this story is that when lovers grow apart, no one is at fault and that it is unrealistic for the less evolved party to comprehend where the other is heading. I highly recommend this very timely and insightful take on 21st Century romance.

Venus and music

I was considering relaying some highlights from other significant Venus events that have occurred during my life. Yet this post is way longer than I planned, so I will leave you now with some musical nuggets to savor. Many of  you know how much I emphasize the importance of music in the enrichment of my inner life. I have selected some videos that artfully illustrate various Venus transits. These songs have kept me company during some difficult yet necessary periods of growth. Please select those that speak to you and let me know if they captured the essence of the transits to your satisfaction. Please feel free to share some of your favorite love songs in the comments section.

You and I  Lady GagaI chose this for this post’s title because this video portrays the simple pure joy of love. The energy portal in Nebraska is the third character in the story line. This is raw Venus in action for me.

The One That Got Away   Katy Perry ~ This is Pluto and Venus personified – love, regret, death, and pain. Good times, not! But very characteristic of this powerful combo.

Cool   Gwen Stefani ~Here we have Saturn Venus taking us through the realization that we can move on and be mature. We can accept ” what is” and cherish the memories of love gone by. Take a look at the cinematography and how Gwen Stefani sees the past in her former lover’s eyes. The style of storytelling is reminiscent of my Awakening post and very Neptune/Venus.

My Boo  Usher and Alicia Keys ~  Here is another Saturn Venus scenario. Two childhood sweethearts reminisce about the past while accepting they have both moved on without bitterness. It also invites you to look at the reality of the individuals, not their glamorous personas.

Halo  Beyonce and Michael Ealy ~ I think the title says it all: Neptune Venus has arrived. The couple endure because the woman realizes that he has a beautiful soul. He is her savior.

For The Love of You Jude Law and Nia Long ~  Another Neptune Venus gem is from the Alfie remake. The song is very ethereal and the chemistry between the two actors is heavenly inspired. Jude Law has Neptune Venus on his Sagittarius ascendant. Need I say more!

We Found Love  Rhianna~ Welcome to Pluto Venus on steroids. I have certainly lived this roller-coaster  ride with one man in particular. We had Pluto trine Venus in our synastry ( same degree and minute!). We also both have Pluto in the 7th house. ‘ Nuff said.

Fighter Christina Aguilera ~ More Pluto Venus fun as she transforms as a result of being manipulated and betrayed. Been there, done that. I blogged on this here:

I Know Him So Well Whitney and Cissy Houston ~ This to me embodies the heart of Venus Retrograde. Your heart aches as you realize you cannot change the past or anyone else. You can only change your reactions and attitudes and rewrite your story.

How did Venus treat you?

Have you felt the wrath of Pluto now that Venus has gone direct?

Tell me about your Venus transits past or present, or those that occur “outside of time.”

Emerging frequencies

Here’s a gift to commemorate the double elevens  1111:

a bonus post!  2 posts in one day, enjoy!

Have you heard? Neptune will be moving direct on November 16th. We have had little forward movement in this Year of the Horse, but perhaps with Mercury leaving its shadow and Mars, Saturn, and Neptune humming along, we may experience more clarity of action, thought, purpose, and vision.  At least for a little while.

Neptune is my go-to planet. It is home. I have a stellium that includes  Neptune conjunct Sun conjunct Mercury and Pisces intercepts my 1st house. My south node is in Pisces. Neptune squares my Ascendant and trines my Mars.  Get the picture? Read Liz Greene’s sumptuous book on Neptune if you long to swim among the sea nymphs for an extended stay ( link provided at end of post).

In honor of the pending Neptune station, I am presenting the collaborative artwork project introduced on Fill in the Blanks, Literally. I invited readers to finish the drawing  I began while on retreat in 2005. The energies of 2005 and 2014 are reunited in the NOW. This was a very enlightening time for me and my art was one method I used to bring forth my inner mystic. Thanks to Sue Dreamwalker and Sarah of Seize One Day for participating and bringing their unique love and brilliance to life. You both raised the vibrations of my unfinished dream by joining forces and creating exciting, new dreams. I honestly do not remember if I had an actual intention for my original drawing.  It does not matter now. A treasure chest brimming with symbols have made their presence known and are summoning us now: a mermaid, DNA strands, squirrel, sea anemone, crab, spirals, pin wheel, seahorse, shark, arrow, caterpillar, fish, waves, triangles,  and more. What has evolved in the present moment is a divine partnership of the ethereal and sublime ~ slightly elusive inner – worlds; out of focus and yet, with a stroke of grace, clear as a bell. We are so much more than the sum of our parts. Neptune leads us by blurring the edges between fantasy and reality. Which is which anyway?

Neptune requires no words.

It seeks an oceanic refuge, an effortless floating and blending of energies,

delightful e-merging of the IAM.

Let the art on this page commune with the artist within you.

Welcome to the depths of your being ..

Another Fall in Philadelphia

It is only fitting that I post about this Hall and Oates song on the first full day of fall, here in Philadelphia. This version with Diane Birch is from Live from Daryl’s House. I moved to this city to start the fall semester of my senior year at Temple University, so it is an anniversary theme of sorts. My trip to University City last week really reminded me of those first days of freedom and adventure in a new city and new state ( Though I did live in Reading , PA  as a child).

The first time I heard this song on the radio while living in Philly was very special to me because it was in early autumn. I told myself I would hear it every year on the radio as a way to usher in the season and mark my life in this amazing city. For a few years I did hear it annually, but eventually the frequency dwindled. But now we have Pandora and YouTube so I can listen to it or watch a video as long as I have a decent wi-fi signal!

The song’s message is actually very dark in nature, but the music is very upbeat with some folksy, twangy guitar licks and jazzy horns. Like so much in life, it is a juxtaposition of energies blended into one.

Here are some pictures that were taken close to my past and present neighborhoods ( by Wikipedia, not me) that closely reflect the beauty of my home with the stunning old architecture, splashes of color, and natural splendor. Philly really rocks, pun intended!

Residential Chestnut Hill ( a classic home ” On the Hill ” )

I could wax poetic about the history and majesty of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. I could brag as many Phila-files do, about the Quaker roots, substantial native american history, the Founding Fathers ( where are the Mothers?) forming of an experimental American government, the first capital of the US, the name – Brotherly Love, but you already knew all about it. We brag about and trash the city all the time, its kind of an unspoken tradition.  I honestly never expected to live in any one place for so long, but here I am. I was born in New York City, but my roots are truly here. However, I am really very different from the young woman who moved into this incredible city with a college friend and her room-mate from Penn. I am so much more who I am meant to be, but with many more scars and broken dreams.

So where is the spiritual angle? Where is the lite in the ordinary?

Let’s just say that this calendar year of 2014 is just beginning as far as I am concerned. With Mars and then Saturn retrograde for most of the year, and Saturn weighing me down as he straddled all of my Scorpio planets, New Year’s day for me has not happened yet! I would say that it will start in early November after the Mercury retrograde post shadow has ended. We are currently in the pre shadow period which happens before Mercury makes his latest foray backward on October 4th. Yes, that again!  Maybe I will use my birthday in early November ( solar return ) to celebrate a true forward motion.

So I have a few days after tomorrow’s Libra new moon to experience new beginnings before the slowdown is again in full gear. Coincidentally ( or not) Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year, begins tomorrow evening at sunset. I do appreciate that many religious and cultural holy days are in alignment with the lunar cycle.

NOW is all we have, so today is like a second-hand New Year’s Eve if I choose it to be. Cycles are in motion constantly, from the microscopic, cellular and quantum level to the universal, cosmic level. Most of them we are not even aware of, but that does not make them any less significant.

Think about it, while I notice the leaves turning yellow while daylight slips away and the black sky entertains streaks of pink and purple. hint – that is where the lite resides.

It is fall again, in Philadelphia….

Update : Just discovered a great article about Philly that really illustrates the heart.

Linda Ronstadt and Me

143060

I looked just like this as a teen.

I wanted to post this in time for her birthday, but time got away from me. Yet it is never too late to acknowledge the brilliance of Linda Ronstadt.

Summer always reminds me of my time at the shore as a teenager. My teen years always remind me of music. When I was a teen, Linda Ronstadt’s music was very popular. People always told me that I reminded them of her.  And they were correct…

I cannot sing a lick, although I spent many an hour as a teen singing in the mirror with a hairbrush as my mike. I was quite flattered when people compared me to Linda. We are both named Linda and I did wear bangs at one time and I do still occasionally favor hoop earrings. What is most striking is how the shape of our faces, coloring ,long dark hair and facial features bear an uncanny resemblance. While I was perusing images of her online, I was amazed at how eerily similar we look, while never at the same time. She is much older than I, and as we both aged, our likeness became less apparent. But even still, some of my current photos do still bear an obvious similarity.

What brought Linda Ronstadt to my awareness recently was her induction into the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The HBO concert was spectacular and  I blogged about Cat Stevens’ performance here. Linda did not show up at the ceremony, probably because these type of events are not a priority and due to her recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. I was saddened to hear about her poor health which has affected her ability to sing. Glenn Frey’s speech at the concert was very moving and the images of her performing made me smile and tear up simultaneously. Linda and I come from similar ethnic backgrounds and that became obvious as her story was shared on stage. We both share  a Latin ( I am Italian and she is Mexican) and Western European heritage. It somewhat explains how our ancestry informed our physical appearance and identity. I write about my identity here.

Naturally I read her chart to see why we look so similar. She has Sag rising, which does not jive with my chart. However her Sun in Cancer gives her a lunar appearance ( round face) and my Moon trines my ascendant. More significant is that Neptune squares her ascendant ( as does mine) and Uranus opposes it as well, adding a strong Aquarian vibe to her persona ( matching my Aquarius ascendant). This would help explain some her luminous, ethereal presence ( Neptune) and her striking image ( Uranus).

For more on her chart, visit here.

While I found these linkages helpful, I was looking for something more… Why do we look so much alike and have the same first name and why did I look the most like her when she rose to prominence? Her north and south nodes are conjunct my Moon and exactly conjunct Venus respectively. This may indicate some past life or spiritual connections that bring her into my consciousness so strongly. I cannot prove any linkage, but …..

Since I do not post my picture on my blog, you can visualize Linda Ronstadt when you read my posts. Oh how I wish I was blessed with a voice that contains even a fraction of her beauty and grace. Fortunately I can always play her music and revel in her pioneering spirit that paved the way for so many women in music, and her ability to use her vocal gifts to transcend stereotyping and move across genres.

Here are some videos that I hope you’ll enjoy.

The first one has a great sampling of images of Linda:

I love this song and this performance is particularly unique. And we look almost identical here, kinda spooky!

Here is some of the music from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert shown on HBO.

Love does not usually come easily with this expression of Venus . But there is such appreciation and gratitude for love’s maturation over the course of time.

Cosmic Retrograde Challenge: Song On The Radio

I hope you enjoy this bonus post for the Cosmic Retrograde Challenge ~

While I was already wearing the Sugilite, I wanted to do something extra to participate along with my fellow blogettes. I had already dug up some old pictures to show to some friends who had recently come back into my life. I began working with my A. T. Mann tarot cards again after years of neglect. I had also started rereading Many Mansions after viewing Shree’s book review.  But these activities did not match the intensity of the Sugilite for me. I wanted to really feeeeeeel something. So I turned to music. I began to forage through stacks of CDs : Prince (maybe); U2 (not now) ; Joni Mitchell (this looks good!); but then I spotted Joan Armatrading and I knew. I felt the power contained within the disc and I knew this would work well. So for three weeks now I have been listening to Joan Armatrading’s Greatest Hits  on my car radio. You may wonder why I chose the car radio.

play now : Song on the radio

In my last post    I described how I became better equipped to tap into information to serve others. Historically I would (and still do) get information on its own terms. Typically  a thought or idea would pop into my head and often lead me to a synchronistic event. My intuition appeared when it wanted to, I had no control over when and where I would be guided.  I was ok with this.  I was grateful to be guided in any form as long as it was for the highest good.  There is one exception however ~ the radio.  I cannot remember how it started but it is the one way I am able to easily receive information at my request.  Sometimes it will work on Pandora or on TV music channels, but it really is all about my car radio. I have been asking for messages to guide me through the radio for a very long time. Never said a word about it until quite recently. I figured people would think I was out of my mind (crazy) if I spoke about my musical oracle. Truth is, I was out of MY mind and into the greater MIND. Usually I would set my intention to get a message within 3 songs. Occasionally I would request a song and it would be played automatically. I highly recommend trying this, very cool!  This method does not always work , but when it does…   So the car radio is the vehicle I chose for the challenge.

Love and Affection  I am starting with the first of three songs on the CD that evoked great emotion. I have arranged them to coincide with the order of my journey.  Since we are looking at cycles, I noticed an overlap between the recent Mercury Retrograde and my Saturn to Sun transit. I examined my first Saturn/ Sun conjunction back in 1984.  I was checking out apartments. It was time to leave the security of living with room mates and have my own place. It was the Summer of 1984 and I was in Graduate School ( Saturn in Scorpio transiting the 9th house). I wanted the independence and freedom of being my own person. I was looking at a small studio apartment in the Castle Building. I had lived in that building a year ago with college room mates. I loved this old space with its high ceilings, huge windows and wooden floors. As I toured the kitchen I saw beans soaking in a bowl on the counter, along with lots of fresh vegetables, and  fresh bread. I was very curious about these beans. An earth mother must live here, I thought to myself! Who will I become? Will I be a good cook? Will I learn how to bake and garden? Will I soak beans? How will my adulthood take form?

I initially associated this song with a crush of mine. This was a couple of years after I moved into that very studio apartment. I had made a great group of friends but was still missing my college ex- boyfriend.  I wanted to feel alive and free and vulnerable again. I was ready for love once more. Later that song referred to other men in my life. But the first time I really got that song was around the time I began to establish a way in the world on my own. I would sing it in the mirror and twirl around full of hope and wonder.

Weakness in me  I did not know of this song until much later in time. I did not have the CD until after I heard this song in concert. This concert I attended was in 1996  , right around my birthday. I saw Joan Armatrading in a small venue and it was amazing. I was in Graduate School again ( a different degree this time) and money was tight, but I wanted a treat. When I heard this tune, I immediately became teary. I knew the story all too well. By this time in my life I had already been involved in a few love triangles. In these cases, one or both of the parties was involved with another partner. The men in my life ( 2 lived in my neighborhood at the time) were prone to ” show up”. This could be taken many ways.  They would pop back into my life after having moved away, or would just show up at my work or my home. Or I would get an email or phone call out of the blue. Or I would meet someone who looked just like a former lover. This song is about love, betrayal, control, and pain. Joan refers to weakness being part of her character. I would add that it applied to all the characters in this drama. Everyone always makes a choice, or chooses to not make one.

Me, Myself, I  The third song in this trilogy has a great reggae beat and a happy melody. Basically Joan wants to be alone and enjoy herself. I often sang this song when I had enough of  a relationship or was so angry with a former partner. I visualized myself traveling and going on adventures freely and joyfully. There is not a particular time period I associate with this song. I placed it last because it is where I am now. I went from the innocence of love to the complexity of intimacy and commitment, to the refuge of independence and mastery. And RELIEF!

Disclaimer: I know in past posts I have either inferred or directly stated that I am done with romance. I want to elaborate on this a bit. First of all, I deliberately leave out the details about my personal life.  Although I do not use my name , some people in my real life read this material and know these men. While I am not in touch with any of them, some of my friends and associates may still be in contact with them. In this cyber world of ours, I prefer to keep things vague. Secondly, I adore men! For most of my life, my best friends were men. It took me a long time to find the connection with women that came easily with men! I do not want my readers to get the wrong impression. I have been fortunate to have loved deeply and experience the beauty of soulful, intimate relationships. It is just that I do not do them well.  Just like cars: I have been driving since age 17 and still don’t understand how my car runs. Well, it is like that for me and romance. I  tend to attract and get involved with very Plutonian, Saturnian and Neptunian partners in a Uranian way. ( Saturn in Cap opposing Mars, Uranus/Pluto in 7th house, Leo descendant, ruler of descendant – Sun, conjunct Neptune) It was exhausting!  I am not saying I will never change my mind. I just do not think there is anything more for me to learn here. My work is DONE. By the way, I do not feel angry about this. I would prefer to call it mature acceptance.

Lessons learned: As I drove around listening to these passionate songs about love and identity, I remembered past associations and also made new ones. This is where the magic happens. Now when I hear Love and Affection, instead of imagining a new partner, I felt the rich, vibrant Cosmic love in the burgundy and rust trees as they shimmered and glowed under the November sun. To quote Steve Winwood, it is a ” Higher Love.” When I play Weakness in Me,  I realize that I participated in dramas that were ultimately unhealthy and somewhat ridiculous. Living in chaos was an easier choice than going about the business of finding a suitable partner and settling down. Today I see that I am my own suitable partner. To live out my chart is to partner with my Sun. My sun is where I star in my life. I have learned to own most of my projections and become more balanced and integrated. Finally, when I sing Me, Myself, I, most of the anger and resentment is gone. I feel lighter and less defended. I am not singing ” I wanna be by myself ” in response to feeling overwhelmed, controlled, or frustrated. I am singing as an expression of gratitude.

Willow     In the course of playing this CD for so long, I came upon a song that I had not noticed before, Willow. Please listen to this gorgeous , soulful composition.  It is very soft and mellow.  I am not really surprised to have discovered it because I took on this challenge in expectation of alchemy. I am in process of becoming a willow.  Willow is a song about loyalty, protection, strength and stability. It is sweet, tender, and ethereal. Perhaps it is a taste of the future.

This challenge has been very Challenging! I have been relentlessly haunted in my dreams by old lovers. Many tears were shed.  This exercise has required major soul-searching.  But in the end it was worth staying with the discomfort. I came out of this experience ever so slightly transformed and renewed. Ghosts have been cleared and released.  I  am aware that I still have plenty of work to do. Fortunately the Saturn/Sun transit is in full effect.

POSTSCRIPT– Remember the young woman staring at the bowl of beans soaking on the counter. I am not through with her quite yet. She returns in a future Collisions series post – stay tuned!
