A Complete Unknown ~ Film Review

As transiting Jupiter  in Gemini opposes my natal Venus and my progressed ascendant edges closer to my natal IC, my love for Bob Dylan intensifies more. This review is a tribute to Venus retrograde and  recurring love.

It is no surprise that Jupiter was conjunct Bob’s sun around when A Complete Unknown was released . I saw the film twice, once just now and earlier in a theater. I had not been to a theater in about five years! I cried throughout the film, not sure why. Later I enjoyed Masala Dosa at a local Indian restaurant. This has nothing to do with Dylan, but it does connect to my past loves.

The film captured Bob’s road from obscurity to fame in  early 1960s New York City. By the way,  it was so cool that I was there the whole time! I was born in late 1960 and remained in New York until mid 1967. Watching the history unfold reminded me of the chaos and rapture of these times. A revolution was forming,  just like now.  How scary and exciting,  just like now.

The direction of this film was brilliant, a scrumptious joy to watch. I am so reminded of my own early twenties. While my life moved quite differently, it still felt like the road came up to meet me way back when. In this bio the key characters came into view quickly and effortlessly. I recall how so much flowed seamlessly when I was that age. Maybe it did not seem that way then, but looking back it was so synchronous.   While I did not know of the Sylvie character before, just watching him watching her, I intuited that they would become close. Some say she was the love of his life.

I enjoyed all the music by all the artists. The acting was , as they say, quite organic. I don’t dislike any Dylan song, They all feel like home in my heart. I never met him, but one of my mentors did, back in the Village. I saw him perform just once, with the Grateful Dead. It was wonderful, of course.

While the plot was based on Bob’s evolution from folk to electric music, I do not think that was the point. Not for me anyway, This artistic shift  does not seem that radical now. Bob was, and probably is , rebellious, stubborn, and is going to go his own way.  Gotta love a moon in Taurus, right!

His prototype reminds me of so many past loves. Our synastry is deep but we are strangers . His sun is on my IC, and that is so important, so intimate. His Mercury is on my moon, which highlights why his poetry fills my heart. With my Venus conjunct his Ascendant, the attraction is inevitable. Bob’s Venus squares my nodes and his Mercury squares Neptune, similar to my Neptune Mercury conjunction.   I also like to write in a Neptunian, ethereal style.

The degrees of his Ascendant opposing his Mercury mirror that of James, ( the mysterious man I met who was many years my junior ), except that his moon in Gemini opposes his Sag ascendant. James is also free – wheeling, an enigma, a musician, and studied linguistics in college. He also writes poetry. Both have the bluest eyes that dance with light.

Not surprisingly, Dylan went through women. His relationship with Joan Baez was perhaps the most public of them all. They sang together in such a joyful, soulful way. Words do not describe it adequately. There are plenty examples of this online.

Bob Dylan is an icon and a mystery. It is also a mystery why I am spellbound by his words. I have dated many creative people, but none were recognized on this level. The archetype of the rambling, travelling man may have spiritual implications for my soul’s journey. I am grateful for his gifts and tolerant of his flaws. See the film, at least once, but better twice!

Happy Venus Direct and Pink Full Moon! To past, current, and future love!

  1. I wanted to low key see this but now I feel more compelled to do so :). My friend and I went to see him play in Seattle in 2022 and have to say, it was not what I expected. It sounds like the movie has a lot of his older songs though which are the ones that resonate with me.
