Past Lives Future Plans

My life keeps getting stranger and I hope I can keep it moving forward with joy.  Above is a photo I took in my apartment mailroom. Just a couple weeks ago I walked by and saw a flyer for the film Past Lives in the screening room. Past lives, are you kidding me? I have been obsessed with past lives, the after life and this present dreamscape for weeks now. So the universe advertises it for me to see in the outer world. Bookmark this thread, I will return to it later.

While I discuss reincarnation, time travel and adjacent subjects often on this site, I have not addressed why it has been so compelling to me. As a college freshman I took a course on religion and was tasked with writing a paper on a major religion. I chose Hinduism. I could not tell you I chose it at that time. I had been to a Shiva exhibit with friends while in high school but was not really exposed to India then. I became more curious about Hinduism because it was so different from how I was raised. Later in college I began to date a man who had lived in India and was very involved in meditation and Eastern mystical practices. This actually intrigued me and attracted me to him. He was a major influence on me while we were together. I am guessing that is when I began enjoying Indian Cuisine. I was living in a part of the city that had many Indian restaurants due to a healthy Indian population. This fascination continued to grow.

In my twenties I began to expand my horizons and explore all types of practices. Attending Hare Krishna events and going to Indian buffets near their center was a part of my routine. Reincarnation was interesting to me in a subtle was but not as important as other topics.

Fast forward to the fall of 1987. I am sitting with a friend in her home watching TV. She was one of my spiritual soul friends and I was blessed to have what is now called a friend group of like minded seekers. On the screen is a preview for a new film. It is called Made in Heaven and was to reach theaters on November 6, 1987. Remember that date, which happens to be my 27th birthday. The film is about a man who returns from the afterlife to see if he can meet his astral plane love before his 30th birthday. If he fails, he is sent back to the afterlife and she will continue with her incarnation. I was so excited to see this film because of two reasons. One was because it was premiering on my birthday. I thought that was a sign. Secondly my life was opening up because on November 9th I was starting my new job at the City. This was to be a new chapter and I had no idea what to expect. All I knew that on November 4th I was going downtown to meet with HR and to another locale to get fingerprinted.

So on November 4th I get all dressed up and go downtown. Apparently I was too early so HR sent my across the street to get processed. Afterwards I was to return for my meeting. I used to wonder what would have happened had they met with me first rather than switch the order.

So I am sitting with rows of strangers in a non – descript room. In front of me sits a tall bearded man wearing a suit. I could see his application form rather clearly. I read his name. I knew his name! He worked as a case manager for many of my clients at a former job a few years back. I remember calling him for a client and was told he no longer worked for that agency. I decided to introduce myself because I knew of him. We chatted for a few minutes. He told me he was also starting on the 9th and we were working in the same department. I thought to myself that he was attractive and perhaps our paths would cross. And cross they did! We worked on the same floor as me. Around the same time unbeknownst to us, we were the only 2 social workers to join the department at the same time. I memo was put in my file to the Union rep. The rep was informed that we were new members of the union. Years later I saw this while reviewing my file. The universe was entangling us in an official way. It was quite unsettling to read and appeared fated as well.

This man and I began a very intense and complicated relationship with many break ups and reunions. The synchs started very early on between us and if I knew better I would have detected the soul recognition.  However I became confused as to why I could not let go and more importantly why he mattered so much. I began to find as many books as I could about reincarnation. I had to know if we were already connected before meeting in 1987. I met him just before my 27th birthday. This reminded me of Made in Heaven where the couple was deeply in love having married in the Astral. However the female was set to do her first earth incarnation and had to leave him. As an aside he and I shared many interests despite the fact that we could not be more different outwardly. We adored Indian food and would enjoy it together  throughout the years.

Back to Past Lives Film :  Last night I saw this film for the second time. It was a rush to view it in a theater with some neighbors. I was immediately struck by a sequence about half an hour in. Nora has moved as a child from Korea to the US. She now is in NYC and has become a writer.  While on the phone with her mother she wonders about old childhood friend Hae Sung. She goes to Facebook to find him. There she discovers he has been been searching for her for twelve years. Through FB they become reacquainted. This plot point was very powerful for me since Facebook has been instrumental lately in both communicating deaths of soul family and helping me track down ex lovers on this clearing karma confessions tour. I cried during most of the film. It captures the non verbal communication between characters flawlessly. This story is about abandonment, re – union. immigration, re-adjustment, and making peace with one’s fate. The theme of reincarnation is multi -layered. I do not want to include spoilers because this film is too special to ruin. What I will add is the concept of ” in – yun ” . This is the karmic introduction of people into each other’s lives who were past life lovers. This theme is echoed throughout the film and leaves one with a bittersweet longing for an ideal ending.

I highly recommend Made in Heaven and Past Lives. They are quite unique, romantic, and emotionally provocative. While my enchantment with life’s mysteries continue, noticing signs can often help my quest. Sometimes the signs can be actual signs!

Enjoy this music video about love triangles and soul mates. I discovered it years ago and it helped me reconcile my desire for blissful connections with the value of attaining spiritual growth through accepting life on its terms.
